If you look at Porsche's numbers trucks subsidize them.

"But those aren't trucks!"

They're sure as hell not cars.

This is why I keep my 1997 Ranger running.  It takes some TLC but I paid off the $15,000 it cost me about 17 years ago.

Same with my 86 Nissan D-21.  But parts are getting harder to find.    And now its needing more TLC than I care to give it.

I guess I'm a lucky boy.  Inherited my dad's 1996 LWB Extended cab F250 7.3 turbo diesel last year.  It's primitive, rides like a buckboard.  Top of the line for the era Lariat package.  New it was $18k I think.  BUT it's rust free, never wrecked and gets 19 mpg whether loaded, unloaded or pulling a car trailer.  And only has 90k miles...less than 5,000 miles a year since new.  Everything works perfect except radio. Plus I get a free shower when I fill up at truck stops.laugh

So I ain't in the market for a truck.

No arguments against our auto companies making money.  They are making tons of cool crazy hp stuff so I’ll give them a pass.  I chalk this up to the same market drivers that made 50’s tbirds absurdly expensive collectors items only a few years back.

For the same reasons I don’t live in a McMansion that eats my entire income I don’t have one of these beasties.

I do remember having the discussion between an Escalade and a Lexus ISF thT stickered 5k cheaper a few years back so...

You make a good point there. A lot of people got very burned in the last recession when the homes and cars they owned that were eating all their take home pay ate EVERYTHING they had when the jobs went away. I realize in the world in general, I am the very person manufacturers hate, I rarely buy new, I do not buy the most expensive, and I certainly do not buy flash and trash.

I am all about quality and recycling, which is probably why I react so badly to any vehicle that costs what I gross in a year. I am just not part of that conspicuous consumption society

I live in the half world where I fully understand the reason Ford are building $100K trucks (I work for Ford)  Owners have been begging for this for a while now, because their customers have been asking for it.  I get it, people want this stuff.  To those people who have said 'The problem with $100K trucks is that you are paying for that stuff on the base model' You are 100% wrong.  It's no secret that no manufacturer wants you to buy the base model of anything in their range.  The base model is always the least profitable for any company.  The higher the spec, the more the profit.  It's the exact opposite of what people have stated here.  The base model is (to a greater or lesser extent) subsidized by the higher trim models.  So people wanting a base truck should be thanking the flying spaghetti monster for those people who buy the loaded ones, it's keeping the price down for you.

If people say 'I can't find a base truck on the dealers lot' I have less than zero sympathy.  This country is obsessed with walking into a dealer and driving home what they want the same day.  When I've bought new cars in the past I've always speced and ordered the car I want.  Waiting 4-20 weeks is no big deal, I've planned the purchase for months or years in advance so why do I need it today.  The only time I didn't order it was when I called the dealer and said 'I want a base 3 door focus in yellow.  The only options I want are manual and air con.  How long will it take?'  'Let me check..... We have that exact spec on the lot'  So I was prepared to order, but they had the exact car I wanted on the lot, so I got the bank to wire the money and picked it up that night.  Other than that I've always ordered and waited.

^That. I don't understand why it's a big deal to order something, or wait for the dealer to a trade with another dealer (which I've also done).

Has everyone turned into Veruca Salt?

Nothing wrong with the dealer trades, but in the past when I've looked into ordering, the dealers have been less willing to negotiate versus what's on the lot, so some of the savings get eaten up by that.  In the case of a truck, if you want the base model, the closest thay have is something with $3K of options you don't care about, but they'll discount it by 3K more than they'll discount a special order.  The outcome is the same price, but there's a nagging feeling you could get have gotten an even better deal if that base truck had been on the lot.

OK, excellent point I hadn't thought of.  I've always bought new cars with my company discount, including the Volvo as they were owned by Ford at the time.  Actually that's not true, we bought a new Toyota once, worst mistake ever as a car, but even then we got a great trade in.

BTW, everyone says not to trade in your car, but my experience with trade in's has been they offered more than I was willing to sell my trade in for after unsuccessfully advertising it on AutoTrader etc.

When I ordered my Mustang I called the most conveniently located Ford dealership to me and said:

"I'd like to special order a white, base model GT 6-spd manual with the Track Pack. I'd prefer to use your dealership because of the location, I'm ready to come in today after work with a deposit and sign the order paperwork. Call me back and let me know what your best price is."

They called my back and said and offered me the car at $3500-3600 off MSRP..........essentially the Track Pack was free.

I ordered the car that day.

It's definitely possible to get a discount on an ordered car, I don't want to imply that.  I'm just saying that in my experience, dealers have been more willing to cut a deal on something on their lot than on something they'd have to order.  I think part of it is they know what incentives are in effect for what they have in stock, but don't know what they will be when the ordered car arrives, but I suspect that is not all of it.

It also gets the vehicle off their floorplan, especially if it's been sitting there for awhile.

I think what Adrian and are talking about is a bit different. When you go to a dealer and say you want to order X car in a specific color with specific options, they understand either they make you a good price and order the car for you, or you'll just go to a dealer that will.

They essentially make a sale with no work on their end.

We were at a horse show recently and another family parked their 2017 F350 Titanium or maybe Platinum beside our 2006 F350. I went over to check it out. Nice truck and the dad was more than happy to show it off. I'm not in the market for a new truck but those massaging seats sent me directly to the Ford website to price one out. Not going to happen right now but it certainly got my interest up. It also got me wondering if the dealer would be willing to swap out all the chrome bits for the lower model bits and remove the chrome/plastic lettering down the side of the box.  I'm kinda weird that way.
