I think I know why they are not upping the hp in the FT-86. It would be a direct competitor to the new Supra. Yes???
I wonder if they would dare re-brand the FT-86 as a Celica?

Gotta figure the new Supra will have at least 400hp. So adding 50-75 hp to the FT-86 would hardly make it a direct competitor.
Wow, that's awfully ugly, and I don't mean the wrap job.
Depending upon how much heavier the Supra is 50-75 hp could be worrisome to it.
Looks wise I am quite disappointed. Did they really have to ugly it up? The FT-1 concept was a damn good looking car, I have it has my work desktop background right now. They made it a bit taller, which is understandable and forgivable, but did they really have to squish its face and give it a domed hood that only Chris Bangle could love? Is this what pedestrian impact safety is doing?
This is what the concept looked like:
If they even could've kept the front air dam / splitter looking the same, it would've been a much better-looking car. More money for the body kit industry I guess.
I don't see how the $50k new Supra would be competitor for the $25k Toyobaru though.
In reply to GameboyRMH:
The answer to all your questions is yes. The "MKV Supra" reminds of a hard top AP1 S2000 for some reason. Maybe I'm seeing things.
The FT-1 looks a little weird in any color except that grey in my eyes.
I had to check multiple times to see what year it was when I read that post. I thought I had wondered into another zombie thread.

Have you seen the rest of the Toyota lineup? The Supra is positively beautiful in comparison.

yes, it's on par with the rest of the Toyota offerings. I thought Toyota was going to be focusing on fuel efficiency, did they change their mind?

Fixed that for you... unfortunately...

Autoblog says base model will have 248hp and optional V6 will be 335hp. They also said Auto transmission only. Pretty bad considering what is available these days. And it might price at 40k. Who in the world would buy that?? Edit: Unless it happens to be a hybrid and there is 100hp of electricity in addition to those gas engines.
Ugh... with those numbers it should be named the "Sorta" instead of "Supra".
It's going to be interesting to see what market segment they try to put this in. With the FT86 in their line up you have to believe its going to be a more up classed car. If you are going after that market you are going to need more than 400 hp. Or maybe you are going after the old Supra fanboys and don't think it will have to compete with corvettes/camaros/mustangs. Isn't that what caused the demise of the last Supra was it couldn't compete in the market it was trying to play in?
Oof. The back of that car is not handsome. Not sure I care for the front fender to a-pillar transition either. Maybe it will grow on me.
I think they gave an extra does of ugly and non-competitive power and auto only all in an attempt to boost sales of FT-86's.

Unfortunately it will probably be worse. I was in lust when the concept car came out, but I knew they would water it down.
Unfortunately they used sewer water!
The tables have turned! Used to be the Supra was way cooler than the Lexus SC, but now i'd MUCH rather have a Lexus LC than what i'm seeing here..

Science!

Your trolling is getting more lame.
Really? Hundreds of millions to develop a new vehicle, engine, etc, to boost sales of what is essentially a sporty economy car?
Try harder next time.
