The '84 VW Rabbit GTi thread got me thinking about that type car - I passed on 40 years ago but I was broke struggling through local college. Can I get a new GTi?
Yes? Not much in the Vw lower end - $32,000 or so. You gotta jump up to $38-$48,000 which is not me......
What's this Jetta? $21,000 almost new?
I know I'll hate it........you?
This one, right?
Looks like the 1.4L turbo engine. Seems like a decent engine compared to the previous 2.0. More power and similar MPG.
My standard word of caution about VAG turbo engines: They are picky about using the correct full-synthetic oil and changed at proper intervals.
Yes, that's it. I'm not buying but it's gotta be in the base Tercel type vehicle.
Not to offend but it reminds me of that sucky VW Fox when it was new. Sorry GRM staff that built a race car Fox a few issues ago.

I can't comment on the transmission, but we have a '22 with an auto and really enjoy it. I think it rides great, it's quiet, radio works well and still has a physical volume knob. The speakers could be better, but it's not something I really care about. Some say the seats are uncomfortable but I don't think they're too bad. We've been on a few 6 hour trips and around 4-5 hours is when I start to get sore. Mileage is great, average 29-32 in town and around 35-40 on the interstate. Best we have ever had was 43 with a tail wind going 65.
I will say, I only have 15,000 miles on it. But there might be some electrical issues. The cruise control can be wonky, and our autostart is also finicky. These are things that other people have asked online about, but I haven't talked to the dealer about it yet.
However, saying that, I would buy the car again.
You can buy a new Mazda 3 with S plan pricing for about that :)

This. And I like VW a lot. Well, mostly my 87 2.0L 16v scirocco.

Nice. I had an 84 and lusted for the 16v
Well you know anyone basically under 25 won't know how to drive it. That's a bonus right?
Since reading this thread, I have noticed a lot of these Jettas on the road. More than I've noticed in the past.
I think the rental fleets like Enterprise has a lot of them which then puts a lot of them in the used market.
We have a 15 with the 1.8tsi. Other than drinking oil like a drunken sailor its been good and low drama. The 1.4 seems like a better motor.
