This is where Hybrid electric vehicles will really start to deliver. The Prius/Insight/Civic/Hybrid/Camry "Gas" electric hybrids are purely for "smug" factor so people can feel superior to those "other" environmentally irresponsible people like us! Little do they know, a Geo Metro was achieving Prius mpg back in the 80's! The Datsun 1200/B210 were darn close back in the MID SEVENTIES!

The "real" value of the hybrid is with the low sulfur DIESEL electric hybrids. Now you're talking about triple digit mpg potential...

Oh, and that beats the hell out of a $109k Tesla that get's recharged from a coal burning electric generating plant!

Depends on where you recharge it, I guess. Around here, most electricity is from gas, although we do have a share in a nuke plant. My electricity is theoretically all from wind, but I can't see well enough to tell exactly what kind of electrons they are.

In any case, I'd rather have the Tesla. This one looks a little too "Tron" for me.

Local fellow is working on a hybrid that charges from a solar garage at his house and another smaller one at work (local college) that went for 24 days (38 mile 2 way commute) using no gas and completed a 370 mile trip on .7 gallons of gas.

It did this with solar produced hydrogen and a full electric charge with the gasoline used to get it home from this one trip. The hydrogen used represented 2 weeks of production from his solar garage.

We had a rod run at our local eatery that had 3 electric cars at it! Keep your eyes open as this becomes more common!! Its gonna be fun.

P.S. My 91 Escort gets 33/50 gas milage.

That's awesome. I am really looking forward to "real" alternative fuel systems. I just wish it didn't take $4+/gal gas, but once these alternatives reach critical mass, we'll all be better off when the cost of my 104 octane goes down because of the lack of demand! ;) Time to turn the boost up!
