Running a 2011 Mustang V6 in DS class autocross. Have to run 18x8" wheels and since I'm just learning I started with a set of 245/40 Federal 595's. Want to go stickier but 18" tires near my size don't get sticky until 265/35...
Will that be too much of a "pinch" on 8" wide wheels?
I'm interested in this too, I'm running 245/40R18s on 18x8s all-around on my 86 which is a theoretically ideal tire-to-rim fit and within millimeters of rubbing the front struts, I might just be able to precision-fit 255s to the front and maybe even 265s to the rear though...
245's are a little pinched, 255's are definitely pinched on an 8" wheel.
People have done it. There's plenty of good tire options in 245 and 255 though. Honestly I'd probably go with 255s.
In reply to dps214 :Everything in 255/35 that I see on the 'rack is well below 200 TW.
Could it be the ZIP code you're entering by any chance? I'm seeing plenty of 200TW and DOT-R tires in that size: Z3s, RT660s, AD08Rs, A052s, R888Rs, A7s, R7s, RRs...
In reply to GameboyRMH :Could be. I also filtered by competition/autocross.

I have successfully run 275/40/18's on 8.5"'s for years. It is a bit pinched but aided traction substantially.

You'll want to select Performance --> EPS as well. I selected that along with Track & Competition --> Race track & autocross.
The "Track & Competition" section is for DOT-R (R-compound) tires that will all be under 200TW. The 200TW tires for any 'street' tire autox class are found in the Extreme Performance Summer category. There's more 245/40R18 availability than there is 265/35R18.
Sorry 'bout the screenshot but that's a 265 on a 8.5" BMW 162 wheel. I tend to pack 'em on but wouldn't put a short sidewall 265 on an 8" wheel
I mean I've mounted 255/35/18 hoosier A7s (which if you're not familiar with hoosier cheater sizes is a 275/35/18 carcass with slightly more cantilevered sidewalls) on an 8" wheel. I wouldn't recommend it and honestly beyond 255 (really even 245 in a lot of cases) you're way into diminishing returns area, but it's certainly possible and plenty of people have done it and been successful with the results. Certainly 265 and 275 on 8.5" wheels is pretty common these days. If it was me I'd go with 255s probably. That mustang is in a weird place though where it's a lot of car and not a lot of wheel, at some point it's worth it to have the extra tire even if it's not providing a ton of benefit. Not exactly sure where this falls on that scale though. But even just 245 width real 200TWs will be a noticeable improvement over the federals.
Your size is 225, unless you have gorilla-strength sidewall slicks in a wider selection. Needs bigger rims first.
To stay legal in SCCA D Street, you'll need a 200tw (or up) tire. Several 245/40R18 options exist from Falken, Yokohama, Kumho, BFG, Toyo, Maxxis, etc.
