What is the general consensus from the members here on owning a 07+ R56 MINI Cooper S?  Surprisingly, I didn't find much already posted to the forum.

They seem like a relatively light (under 3k) chassis with decent turbocharged power.  Not bad looking, fun to drive, and autocross friendly.  Looking around online seems to say that the earlier super charged cars are a bit more reliable than the later turbo cars, but I do think the engines are completely unrelated.  Timing chains sound like a hot topic as well.  Are they fun enough to get past the maintenance quirks?  Is it akin to owning a front wheel drive BMW?

Let me know what you think!

I hate front wheel drive cars, but loved my 2010 Mini S.

i did have the timing chain replaced under warranty, it was making tons of noise.

did awesome in the snow with winter tires and was a blast on the back roads. sold it when my kids out grew the back seats.

had a NB before it and got a NC after but would definitely buy another MINI if given the chance.

The R56 came with two different engines. The N14 from 07-10 and the N18 from 11-15. Both have their issues, but in general the N18 is considered better by those who work on them. Granted, most of the guys I know who work on MINIs for a living own R53 models.  Of all MINI models, the current F56 version is apparently the most reliable.

I briefly owned a 2015 Cooper that I inherited from my mom.  The 3 cylinder turbo with the six speed was surprisingly fun, and as mentioned, that generation's reliability seems to be much better.
