Easy way- Build a 350. Hard way, but way better- LS variant.

Have you seen this one? All your questions may be answered.

What transmission do you have and what one do you want?

"Performance" on a truck with 300,000 miles? Define your performance, Auto-X, drag race, hill climbs? How much longer will you own the truck? Maybe the rest of the truck isn't worth investing all that chrome into.

If you pull the engine and do all the work yourself, new rings, bearings, gaskets etc. will cost _____ . Add a hot cam, headers, some bling, now you're up to $1500 or so.

If it were my truck and the body - suspension were still in good order, I would find a wrecked Chevy wagon family hauler with low miles.

Tbh, can you do your own work?

c'mon, drop a big block in there. put one of the 555cid engines in there. 676hp/650 ft lbs. And I'm actually kidding, stick with what you have, go for better gas mileage. With the rising gas prices you'll need some longer gears perhaps.

yes...chrome it all. Block, transmission, carburetor, belts...all of it.

the only thing i would spend any money on to make a 305 faster is headers. at least you can re-use them when you realize the 305 is hopeless and get your 350......

ls1 or 3 with a t56 or something similar. If you have a lot of money to throw around go ls7 or 9=] If you want to go semi-budget but still make decent power from something that sounds good as hell: lt1.

305 in my '77 Monza Spyder was plenty

I can't verify it was a 305 though. Said 5.0 liter on the fender but it ran like stink. Could have been any small block I guess

swap in a 96-99 vortec 350. get the TBI intake from GM, and it's a bolt in deal. get a custom chip burnt for it, and you are looking at probably 300hp, 400 or so torques, and close to 20mpg.

you can buy a complete running motor for about $300, and the intake is about $200 or so. you use everything else off your truck- distributor, throttle body, all sensors, exhaust manifolds, etc. when it's done, it will look nice and stock. but you could dress it up with chrome valve covers if you feel so inclined.
