The Disco Nova rallycross car has been dancing around in my head for a while. If i had a drivetrain I would go that route.

I would also say G body, especially if you have a strong dirt circle track community near you. You can find roller hobby stocks and modified for little to nothing compared to the parts in them.... and if you wanted to get really creative you could do a body drop a la Roadkill NASCARLO
That said: if I were to purpose build a RallyCross mutt, it would be a square body S10 with Bravada/Astro AWD and v8 goodness. 2WD might survive better and you could setup the rear with a 4 link and possible modify some stockcar stuff for the front.
Bonus points for making it look like a stomper
Not that any of those options would be terribly competitive but they would be fun.

I agree for only one reason. With a solid axle, for best handling you will want something like 4.56 gears at a minimum. Circle track guys run gears in the low 6s for a reason. Gearing that steep will be impossible on the street if you have no overdrive.
If you have IRS, driveshaft torque is decoupled from suspension motion so final drive doesn't matter. On the downside, torque is decoupled from suspension motion so you will have no grip
I am not following this at all. Gears are generally selected by where your engine makes power not what type of suspension you have.

GOD KNOWS WHAT CLASS IT WOULD RUN IN.
If you get an 84-87, the stock brakes fit under 15"wheels. So stockcar steelies and Grabbers FTW
A little googling surprised me how close the curb weights are on an e36, Volvo 240, 3rd gen camaro, and a g-body. I figured the bmw would be by far the light weight of the group. It's lighter, but not by much. I ccan't say which car has the most weight to lose.

If you have a solid axle, the shorter the final drive, the less the driveshaft has a tendency to lift the right tire under acceleration, because there is less driveshaft torque for the equivalent amount of axle torque/vehicle acceleration.
Even with 4.78s, the RX-7 turns left a lot more easily than it turns right. But it's a lot better than the 3.91s or 4.08s. I am hoping that it is better still with the 5.43s. (On dirt you WANT weight transfer, drive the outside tire into the ground and get some grip!)
We chumpcar raced a Malibu gbody. With v8 and Saginaw 4 speed we got it down to 2400# with cage.
Flexy flier for sure! Sure was fun too! Would make for 1 hell of a fun time on dirt!
Actually, have a friend with a third gen without a drivetrain that he wants to sell I think. Western MD, but dont know that he would give screaming deals on the shell. be glad to give you his email if you want.
Only thing about them is the front overhang is so long that you can easily rip up the bodywork. You might have to swap springs to longer ones if you have a rutted course. Oh, and how to rallyx rules treat t-tops. Finding a camarobird without them is a bit harder it seems.
Anyone ever try the American Racer dirt track tires, or are those a one trick (specific quality of clay surface) pony?
other daydream rallycrosser would actually be a Mustang II, so many suspension parts available it boggles the mind. Give it the nice Mad Max stripped out treatment with a loud open exhaust and some knobbly tires.

Thanks for the heads up, but I'm in western Ohio, that would be quite a haul. If I were going to drive that far for a shell I would go south, not east.
I'm digging that mustang 2.
Not light, but my thoughts have been towards a 77-90 Caprice or Impala with a locker and all terrain tires.
You should do this so I stop thinking about buying it:

I added it to my CL favorites list yesterday haha. We have good taste. Well similar, not good.
Edit; Ironically enough, my engine and trans supposedly came out of an el camino. It's the white trash circle of life.
It's not far down the road from me if you want me to look at it, although that could be dangerous for me if I end up buying it.
The 90's Lincoln mark whatevers with irs are usually cheap to free; I wonder how light you could get one stripping it out for a racecar?
In reply to EvanB :
I don't think i want it. I mean I do, but there are a lot of cars I would rather have for $800. Thanks for the offer, and you should go buy it.
