So last week I ended up getting a call late at night the the transmission in the 1998 Ram was acting up.

When you got to about 20-25 it would try to shift to second, but then change back to first and then second, but never really committing to either gear. Fluid was slightly low (just below the safe range), topped it off and no improvement.

After waiting over an hour (it was now 1:30am) for AAA to even say that some had dispatched a driver, I gave up. I had my son cancel the call to AAA, and said I'd drive it home.

I experienced the issue he called me about as soon as the truck reached 15-20 and tried to shift. After pulling into a parking lot, I squeezed myself under it far enough to unplug the remission harness connector.

I then drove it home manually shifting between 2nd and 3rd with no slip regardless of throttle or hills.

Based on the behavior and research it looked like the governor solenoid and sensor were the culprit. This weekend we replaced them, put in a new filter and fluid, then cleared the codes. Took it for a test drive and it was better, but no OD or lockup and once warm it  started to do the same thing. Unplugged the harness and got back home in limp mode.

As a Hail Mary we disconnected the battery and turned on the headlights and let it sit for about 5 minutes. This time in the test drive it was better, but still not right. There was none of the indecision on the 1-2 shift, but no kickdown (TV cable is adjusted correct and moves smoothly), and not OD.

Called it a night and unplugged the battery and left it overnight. Yesterday morning I reconnected the battery and took it for a test drive. I got excited when it had all gears and the torque converter locked up during the first 2 miles of the test drive.

That was short lived. When I reached the service road for the highway to started acting up, and I ended up unplugging the harness again to get home without abusing the trans with the incomplete shifts. At least I had the forsight to put some 2x6 blocks in the bed so I could raise it up and make it easier to reach the harness plug.

Anyone have any experience with 46RE transmissions and what I might want to look at?

I have an appointment for next Tuesday with a local transmission shop. I'm done with the parts cannon since next steps would be replacing the harness and remaining solenoids, replacing the valve body, or trying a Transgo kit, but none are guaranteed to work and ATF+4 isn't cheap.

If I can do something simple and not have to drive my son to his new job until next week, that would be great. The local ford dealers final day before closing was last Friday and he started at a nearby infinity dealer today. I'm sure not having transportation is just adding to the stress of starting a new job.

The only electronics on a 46RE are the input and output speed sensors, governor solenoid, governor pressure sensor, temperature sensor, and the OD and lockup solenoids.  So it almost has to be one of those.  Basically from a mechanical perspective it's a 727 torqueflite with an electronic governor, a solenoid controlled lockup clutch in the converter and a solenoid controlled OD unit bolted to the back for 4th gear.

Is it throwing any codes when it misbehaves?

I didn't check codes until I got it home, so there were several from the harness being unplugged.

I believe the U0422-00 code said something related to the governor pressure when I clicked on it, but it hasn't returned since changing out the have rot sensor and solenoid, even after unplugging the harness.

I just checked the codes from yesterday's test drive.

I'll clear them and take it for a test drive and check them before unplugging the harness so I know which are real and which are just due to forcing it to limp mode by unplugging it.

Output speed sensor has failed. Installed a E36 M3 ton of them. It doesn't shift because the pcm doesn't have a clue on what is happening. Also oss in conjunction with the input speed determines if you have a gear error ratio or slipping.

My spitball opinion from this side of the screen.

So I took it for a ride to pick up a new speed sensor.

Before going I had to plug the transmission harness back in and noticed it didn't seem to latch well.  It took some wiggling to get it plugged in and latched. I also wiggled the plug on the speed sensor to make sure it was secure.

During the drive everything seemed normal, although once or twice it was indecisive. I also noticed the speedometer tracked accurately in steady state, but was sluggish at times, especially coming to a stop.

No codes and I'm thinking I'll put the new speed sensor in and take for a longer drive, including some highway miles to see if it was just the connector not seated causing the problems now.

I still think the governor was the original issue, since that came out of the blue, with no one touching the harness or connectors, but the follow up issues may be poor connections or the oss as suggested.
