Not mine but I thought bug fans might want to hear the story & see it. The VW purists probably won't like it though.
My son's room mate is always trading, fixing & selling cars. He had a 2 door Tahoe that had a blown motor that he got really cheap, then he got a rusted out Suburban from Minnesota for cheap, with a great running motor & trans. He put them together, then traded for this.
A '63 bug. I don't know much about bugs except for the '72 that we had when I was in high school. Drove the wheels off of it & froze in the winter driving it.
This '63, PO built the 2100cc motor, with intakes that have injector bosses, an ecu that I don't remember the name, nothing I've heard of before, Ford injectors, Dodge T.B., MDS ignition module - which the ecu needs to trigger it, Walbro fuel pump, wide band O2. The ecu & MSD box sit where the back seat once was. Wiring is questionable also with all the butt connectors.
It barely ran when he got it. Turned out 2 injectors were really clogged, then it wouldn't start at all on day 2. That turned out to be the MSD ignition box.
After new injectors & a new MSD, it runs great.
The PO paid a shop big bucks to build the motor & tune it - when the injectors & ignition were good. Apparently so much $$ was spent that it triggered his wife to talk to a lawyer & that's why he got rid of it.
Would this qualify for a $2021 challenge? I think he got the Tahoe & the Suburban for @ $1,000 total.
That motor is so worth money.

How much is it worth? He really, really likes driving it, so much that it's his new daily driver. Good thing it's fairly warm here in Florida.

Used I have no idea VW stuff is all over the map used and very location dependent.
It would cost something on the order of around 6K to get a 2110 kit and have it assembled for you that is without injection. Turbo kit is about 2K in parts depnding on what you use. All the rest adds up pretty quickly as well when you add in the fuel pump and regulators and everything else required. I bet he could sell that in the 8-9K range all day long at least in SoCal.

I've told him to take to some vw meets in the Spring. Or maybe list it on BAT?

Oh ya the dyno was 320hp...I've been told, haven't seen the printout though.

If he has documentation that he was into the two Suburbans for a grand(or at least under $2k), documentation on the swap for the Bug, and receipts for the new MSD box...and all-in he's at or under $2000, then yes it's Challenge eligible as it sits.
He also has the potential to sell off up to $1000 in parts off the Bug for recoup(provided that he documents he had at least $1k in the 2 Suburbans).
I'll be the first "vote" or whatever to assign that thing a $2000 FMV if you need. Turbo VW love deep here and this one has the potential to be proper fast awesome challenge car!
All he needs is documentation on his out-of-pocket for his end of the trade plus what he's spent on the bug.

A 2110 would need to run 22-25psi to make that sort of power and likely on E85 to survive. CB's turnkeys in a 2.4 liter with turbo at 18psi make about that on pump gas but ~15-16K for a motor. Find out what transmission is in it. If its a 91 ribbed bus transmission it might be built up and that has some serious value as well.

What to look for to id a 91 ribbed bus transmission? 91 ribs?
6 rib will look like this. This is what I have in my baja with weddle gearing.
In reply to mdshaw :
I think what he means is an "091, six rib bus transmission" from a 1976-79 bus.
Just for my own curiosity, what's "waddle gearing"?

Weddle as in the company that made new internals:

Not really. One thing about VW's is that putting non-stock motors in them really doesn't hurt them (unless they are some super original car of course). Motor upgrades are super common.
He absolutely stole that car. The motor, as noted, is worth big money, but heck, if you took that motor out and put a stock one in that car would probably be worth at least 5 grand (depending of course). The days of cheap bugs is long gone.
I do wonder how long a motor like that will last, it's pushing the bleeding edge. I would be very careful about temps on it though. There is no way that motor is thermally stable over what, half throttle?

Ya I am curious how long air cooled heads last when adding a turbo. Didn't Porsche's first turbo 911 production released motor have water cooled heads?
