Can someone explain to me the feel of a 700r4 shift...when the TV cable is not set correctly. I believe I've done it correctly. Already lost one trans and don't want to lose another. Shifts feel delayed then abrubt. Shifting into overdrive happens anywhere from 45 to 50 mph at higher revs (no tach so unknown at what RPM). Sometimes very perceptively sometimes less so. I've watched a lot of Monster trans videos among others.
Ready to bring to the local automatic transmission shop.
(Manuals are so much easier)
Tv valve in the valve body could be sticking

On my firebird the new cable I bought was 1/2" too long and the trans would not shift any where near normal. It took me having to pull the pan and get eyes on the thing to figure it out. If the cable adjustment does not pull out at all check to see if the cable is too long.

It will shift too early or too late.
Easy to adjust. You can reset the adjustment to eliminate the cable as the problem. Squeeze the cable housing where it mounts on the bracket near the TB and pull it out most of the way. Floor the pedal and it will click in as far as it needs.

That's just it. I've done that. Mayhap I need a new cable? I'm bringing it to a trans shop tomorrow for someone else's eyes to look at it.

Its rare, but I have seen them break off the nib on the end in the trans, but this would cause no operation... meaning you couldn't have adjusted it.
I'd be looking to the valve body.
Dropped off at AAMCO. Initial thoughts following discussion are not good. Funny, when I drove it today it was fine in the first 2 miles. Some almost imperceptible shifts. Then something changed. I could feel it. After that it went to shifting at higher RPMs and abruptly. Tech at shop not hopeful. Big money if needing repair because old.

That's cute. There's basically noone rebuilding in any trans shop anywhere that can't fix a 700r4. If they want you to think that knowledge is rare or specialized beware of whatever else they try to convince you of.

I knew a guy who was rebuilding these in his backyard about 10 years ago.. I bet most shops have a guy who can fix them blindfolded.
Thing is I have the original out. I know a guy who can rebuild it. $350 plus whatever parts are needed.
Any special tools needed?
