The driver and passenger side power windows just started having problems. They will only go up and down with help. I can hear the motor running. I would guess stripped gears. Before I tear it apart I would like to know what I'm getting into.

Usually there are 3 pucks inside the main gear that fall apart, Dorman makes a kit to fix it, pretty common problem. I have heard of people using 3/8" nuts and putting them in place of the pucks, but it has been a while since I messed with that style Ford window motor.
Yep, that sounds what happened to my 1993 Mustang and 1995 F150. The "plugs" broke in the regulator gear. Its very common on Fords of that vintage. They look like this:
