Hypothetically speaking, if one wanted to pick up a beater from craigslist, ditch the Porsche engine for something completely improper, and throw lots of power at it, which would be the best bet? This would be caged and turned into a track rat and then most likely completely rewired. Would a 924 transaxle handle 4-500 hp?
Should I be looking for a turbo model or does it matter with my plans?
First question - Get the 44, or throw GT flares at a 924...Widebody FTW.
Second question - NO EFFING WAY! They can barely handle the power they have. A 944 turbo transaxle would probably handle it, and they have the added benefit of a limited slip...
Third question - bodies are basically the same among 944s, but the later cars have better offsets and geometry (86 and up). If you buy a turbo and gut it, I'll hate you forever...
Yeah, you want the 951 transaxle. The non-turbo transaxle will live behind a stock LS1 if you are careful in 1st gear, but even that's iffy.
short answer- No,
IRRC anything past 350 hp is a crap shoot, and thats on a late 924T /early 944 trans axle (which will bolt into to an early 924 btw, but the input shaft is going to be larger and a custom adapter needed.) A 951 (944 turbo) trans axle may get you a bit more durability, but I think things will still have a tendency to go boom in an ugly way pushing over 400 hp.
if your looking to install that much power, I think your better off going with a more conventional transmission/ rear end and ditching the trans axle set up all together.

Does a Corvette transaxle fit?

Anything fits if you have a big enough hammer...

So basically, what I want is an '85 non-turbo model to get the better suspension geometry? Also, with a 'sploded engine. I think the Corvette transaxle idea has merit; I DO have a really big hammer...

Sorry, I meant to post 86 and up. Find an 86 with a blown engine.
I like the 924 body better then the 944 so I would say try to find a 924S.
I agree with 93excivic. Try to find a 924S. They are basically 944s with less body.

The less body is less fender flare. That is a bad thing. There is little penalty in weight or wind resistance and once the big assed engine is in, flares will be needed to contain the big assed wheels and tires.
Yeah, I'll probably end up going with these flares to enhance the effect...

Plus eleventy billion. The 924 is a nice-looking car. The 944 is a great-looking car.
Has anyone ever put a UZ V8 in one of these?

Caution! The 85.5 and 86 944, while having the good suspension, does not have the "modern" Porsche offset. That change didn't come until 87 (along with ABS). So an 86 would net you alloy arms, but still allow Fuchs (which is why I got mine, FWD offsets and ABS are for sissies).
Also, I think you want a 944 with a blown engine AND trans, so you can swap in an LS1 and T56 transxale from a rolled C5 Vette. The 924's narrowness would be a hindrance here. I love the "add flares to the flared 944" idea though!

+10,000
Box flares on box flares!

From what I remember when Porsche brought the 924 back as the 924s... it DID have a higher top end than the wider 944

You have to remember that the 924S and 944 had identical engines/drivetrains that weren't exactly "overpowering".
Put 400HP in both cars and the 944 will be faster (and corner better).

Anyone know who sells these flares?

Whoever stuck that pic first in the hotlink thread knows. There's a link there, too, but it's probably buried by 100 posts of random garbage by now.

Just came across a 944 on local CL that looks good, but claims bad clutch. Is this a miserable job, or driveway doable? It's 2000.00.
Honestly, I think if I wanted a 944 instead of a 944-shaped bastard child, I'd shy away from the cheap craigslist deals. Usually, they've gone through enough trouble that they are just trying to recoup something of their expenses.

Miserable and way over-priced. I paid $2000 for a fully-documented nice one...
