Hey all,
I just picked up a "new" (oh...so...new!) '96 Escort sedan and am in the process of getting it up and going to where I could drive it daily (or maybe on days that end in "y").
Anywho...it had a miss when I got it and I put new plugs and wires in it. To my dismay, the miss didn't unmiss whence the new plugs and wires were put on. So's, I started pulling wires off. The only one that didn't shock the living piss out of me was numero two-oh (er, uh, dos).
Yeah...so, I've got juice flowing through all 4 plug wires EXCEPT number 2. I figure that means my coil is shot.
However, I wanted to run it past the gearheadtrust here to make sure it doesn't set off some other alarm with you all.
First thought is, Well...the coil is firing all the other three plugs, but not this one...must be the coil. Next thought is...heck, it's firing 3, WHY isn't it firing the other one?
Am I on the right track? Good news is coils 'r cheap for Escorts.
Thanks!
Clem
It's a wasted spark system, ie two coils in the pack.
Each coil fires two plugs at the same time.
One coil fires #1 & #4, the other fires #2 & #3.
It could be that the #2 coil connection side is shorted to ground inside the pack.
That would allow #3 to fire, but not #2.
Carter
best I can tell, there is only ONE coil in this system.
Maybe I should have clarified before that this is a 1.9 (ie, non-GT) escort.
Thanks,
Clem
Does it have a distributor cap on it? If so, buy a new one. If it has two coils, buy the one connected to cylinders two and three.
It has one coil and no distributor. I guess just one of the coil terminals has failed or something.
Each plug wire plugs into a separate port on the coil. It looks like this:
Oh yeah...hotlinks!
Clem
Just for the record, I'm relatively certain it is the coil because the plug wire is new and the plug that came out of this cylinder was fouled (not firing) and a known good plug does not spark when plugged into the wire on this cylinder.
Clem
I would agree with bad coil. The Boy's Tracer (same 1.9) had same problem with #1 cylinder that was cured with a new coil.
Sounds like a coil pack to me.
Relatively cheap and 10 minutes to replace with an 8mm socket.
It could be the one wire bad...just plug it into a different hole and test for the previously mentioned wet pants.
Look into the offending coil outlet and you may see arcing carbon or physical damage......or just replace the coil pack and be done with it!
Put a little anti-sieze on the plug threads and some dielectric grease on the boots...someone will be thankful.
If it is a 5 speed, go for some shifter bushings soon.
Yes, I am good at Escorts...dd/pizza delivery car is a 91 with 352,917 miles on it.
Bruce
Cool, deal and thanks folks.
I'll get a coil on there in the next couple of days.
Bruce, about the shifter bushings: Yes, I'm pretty sure this one is overdue for them. Are they pretty easy to do and where do you buy the bushings? (I'll look in the manual also, but it doesn't hurt to ask).
Thanks!
Clem
Coil is on order from rockauto (It's my first time with rockauto, figured I'd give it a try).
You can get the bushings from Ford or Mazda..run about $12 for a set of 2.

Ford E7GZ-7A133-A
Mazda B001-46-062

This has 2 sets for $15
NAPA might have them for cheap, but availability is questionable.
Part number: ATMO0771303
Corksport has bronzeoil bushings that are pricy and a bit overkill for a daily driver.
My trick is to hit the junkyard and get a new bolt from the transmission side, then grind and punch the center set out so you can replace all three sets.

Excellent resource for Escorts.

Ya, like I said, '... two coils in the pack.'. One pack, two coils, four plug wires.
Too bad I'm not close, I have spares. it's dead easy to connect the harness and plug wires up to a known good unit for diagnosis.
I'll be surprised if the new pack doesn't fix it.
Carter
The new coil pack (and yes, I see what you mean: two coils in one pack) fixed it this morning. 33% more horsepower than yesterday!
These little cars are great, IMO.

You can also get the shifter bushings from Autozone for about.... $4 for them all.
I have a spare pair i can get the part numbers off for you if you'd like?

Sure...thanks. You all have been way helpful about the bushings. It's definitely something that I think is needed on this car, so I appreciate the information.

Napa part number ATM0771303.
These are also well worth the money: http://www.corksport.com/corksport-bronze-oil-shifter-bushings.html
[edit]
Someone beat me to the Napa part number. I can't find the Autozone number right now, but they're probably the same thing at the same price.
