Interesting. I've never thought that the sound was one of the LS engines strong points. Don't get me wrong. I like the sound but I've never thought it was exceptional compared to other V8s. I don't know that I've ever driven one with open headers however and that might change my mind.

So where's that new flat plane crank Coyote engine? *edit: www.car-part.com doesn't have one listed nor does Ford Performance parts as a crate engine.

They make flat plane cranks for LS's. I'm just sayin'.

DOHC V8s sound better than pushrods. Just MHO.

You'll never see one. The vibrations are massive and really hard to control - you can break the crank. This information is second-hand from Ford via one of the top UK journalists in private conversation. That may be an issue here as well, it remains to be seen.

Blackbird is doing this as a one-off. As a promotional tool, it's a better choice than an LS especially since Moti has no plans to sell parts for the swap - but now he's got your attention, he'd be happy to sell you other things As an effective track tool, it may not be the ideal choice. But that's not the point. The point is to get you talking about BFW, and we're doing exactly that. Mission accomplished.

I've always preferred the sound of a good 60's small-block Ford at high RPM over the LS, but the GM engine does sound good with the right cam and exhaust. It works better as a tenor than a bass. Those are both pushrods so that's not the key. I don't know what the difference is, honestly, but those Fords do sound sweet. There's one at the Mitty every year that's just aural sex.

NOHOME wrote: Nice numbers, but Meh... I am too lazy to go to 9000 rpm looking for power. The LS starter motor has more torque at 3500 rpm than the Ferrari engine.
Engine. The 458 is powered by a 4,499 cc (274.5 cu in) V8 engine of the "Ferrari/Maserati" F136 engine family, producing 570 PS (419 kW; 562 hp) at 9,000 rpm (redline) and 540 N. m (398 lb. ft) at 6,000 rpm with 80% torque available at 3,250 rpm.

80% of 400 is 320, which is more torque than a 4.8 put out. At any RPM. Almost the same as the 5.3's peak torque, which it should be pointed out happens mugh higher than 3250rpm.

And it's not at peak, it's well off-peak at that point.

I'm reminded of the Ford 5.2 engine, which blows the pushrod 5.0 out of the water at all RPM even though it's a 'high RPM engine'. The older lumps are like Diesels in that they aren't "torquey", they just suck at low RPM and then keel over and die.

Woah man, gotta be careful with truths like that!

I've built a lot of stuff that basically wouldn't move if you removed all the boosts. Unlike most diesel enthusiasts, i can freely admit it!

If you haven't seen the rest of the car, it's worth checking out. It's pretty wild, lot of cool engineering, with the long-tail conversion and active aero. Morpheus Miata.

Well, one you'd be proud to show off and go to expensive places, etc. the other you'd be afraid to take anywhere in case she's got a record or causes you to have a record.....
