A buddy once suggested getting a 4WD Econovan, installing a big block and transaxle mid-engine, a roll cage, and four seats. Take it and three friends and sign up for the Baja 1000.

When I was in High School I really wanted to make a Subaru Justy into a serious rally machine, with a widebody and everything.

I've also wanted to swap a bike engine and trans into something, an MGA would be hilarious.

Nice to see I'm not the only Rampage / Scamp fan. They seem like the perfect little errand-running trucklet. I'd probably just lift the drivetrain from a turbo PT Cruiser if I got my hands on one.

Other crazy ideas currently in my head:

1. Buick Sommerset. Like this.

2. The Jeep Compass. It was supposed to be a "rally car inspired" Jeep. It shared platforms with the Lancer EVO X. You can see where this should have gone. I would like to finish the job. Alternatively, one recent thread noted that the EVO X shared platforms with, of all things, the Dodge Journey.

A Saab Sonnett III, but replace the doofy 65hp Ford Taunus V4 with....

One of those 180hp LS-inspired Motus V4s. Not sure what you would need for a transaxle to make it work though. Audi or WRX transaxle with the rear output blocked off maybe?

Other weird cars I wanna find and screw with: AMC Eagle 4 door or 2 door

Install a 4.7 stroker or a 4.0 HO Turbo and a modern Jeep transmission and you'll have a good time.

I like the idea of a restomod 1964-1966 Rambler American with a Jeep straight six.  There's a company selling a 4.6L stroker crate engine that's rated at 270hp / 300 ft-lb that would be fun in a 2500 lb car.

Since the first Omnis and Horizons had VW power, and the Rampage is a cool little trucklet, as was said above, I'd drop a 2.0 16v or VR6 in one.

Vega GT with a Buick turbo V6.

GMC Safari rwd with a small block. Oh...wait a minute...

Fiat 850 with smart fortwo drivetrain.

I had one project that I wish I had completed, but I had several at the same time so sold this one on.  You probably have never heard of a Triumph Mayflower (1949-1953) , but they look like a miniature Rolls Royce and they used the suspension of an earlier  saloon model.  They used a 1247 cc flat head engine which was pretty horrible - they had a cast iron block and alloy head that with time welded itself to the head studs - the dealers had special cutters too run down the head studs to enable them to remove the corroded on heads.

What inspired me is that the front suspension was essentially the same as the TR2 through TR4, which meant that upgrading to disc brakes was a bolt on task., and you could just roll a TR4 rear end under it.  I had intended to install a modified TR4 engine and OD transmission with around 130 bhp instead of the original 38 bhp.  The car was about 100 lb.s lighter than a TR was, but after the swap it would probably be about the same weight.  I thought it would make a fun little Q-ship which if you aren't familiar with the term, was a heavily armed merchant ship with concealed weaponry used in WW 2.

Still wish I had stuck with that one as I think that it  would have been a neat little car.

One of my aunts had a Beretta Z26 when I was a kid. I loved that car, even though it seemed to have something new wrong with it  every other week. I still love the way they look. One of these with some C5 underpinnings would be a great way to waste some money.

Funny you mention that.

AMC 6 cyl turbo

But back to the thread at hand.  Back in my youth I had a VW Type 3 Fastback.  I wanted to put 930 flares on it.

I've wanted to put a Quad 4 in a Chevette for longer than I can remember.

I was going to swap a Diesel in my Skoda, but instead found a good deal on a nice looking Diesel Rabbit. In hindsight, the diesel swap would have likely been less work than maintaining that Rabbit, the single worst car I've ever owned.

I'm driving a lowered Spark with wheel, brakes, intake, exhaust, soon to be tuned. If I find a good deal on a base model I have plans because I unexpectedly love the car. Did you know that the second gen GM 1.4T/1.5T shares it's architecture with the 1.4 in the Spark?

I loved me some NATCC Cloud Cars in the '90s enough that I remember searching for stick shift ones years later...  I assume some SRT parts with a turbo cranked to 11, paint, and all important white OZ wheels I could complete that dream.
