Looking for some hypothetical dragcar ideas here. Just has to be stock suspension and MUST fit a 10" wide wheel without doing a minitub. Also has to be somewhat readily available, without huge amounts of cancer, and with OK parts support. I would build a Fox body Mustang, but there isn't any way of getting down to 2150# minus driver and still retaining any rules mandated interior.

Turbo 4's/rotaries get "unlimited" turbo, V8's have a max 94mm limit; so I would assume the same limits, but it isn't written exclusively that way, plus a single N2O nozzle and get to weigh 2450# with driver. Plus this is all done on a 26" tall, 8.5" wide slick. I could run a V8 like everyone else, but then it's just another bellybutton.

BTW, it has to be able to go at least 5.20 in the 1/8th, about 8.20's in the 1/4. Those times equate to about 1k hp for 2450#.

Any ideas?

Stock suspension as in completely stock or stock geometry?

Stock geometry.

Budget? "Cheap". What I mean by that is I know a comparable V8 to run these kind of times are 15-20k, 10k-ish chassis... So, roughly not building anything yourself, 40k.

And no way in berkeleying hell would I run a Supra. I don't like them, plus the 6 in those get hit with 600 more pounds.

I think we need the rest of the rules, then. Are you saying that a Supra would have a minimum weight of 2750?

HAS to be RWD? I'd say Starquest w/ a 4g63. Those'll run that fast. Otherwise, if you go AWD... DSM.

While i think that would be REAL hard and REAL dangerous to get into the 8s on stock suspension, it would be pretty amazing and awesome.

Wouldn't that be the case with the stock suspension on any car?

My head 'asplode just thinking about it. Maybe it's because Miata might not be the answer.

Are there any rules about swaps?

Why not a fox-body? A 4-eye will get in that weight range with a full interior easily (especially a stripper 4-cyl coupe, wind-up windows, no A/C, no radio, etc).

Another option is the longer-wheelbase Thunderbird. You can easily find an 83-84 (the 85/86 has the same heavy interior as the 87/88) with manual windows and no options. All the Mustang stuff bolts in and it will be more aerodynamic. If you can do lexan it will weigh nearly the same as well. Even better if you can run fiberglass, etc.

I'd see what find of fender-rolling or flares are allowed an look into a 1st Gen RX-7 as well. 4-link style SRA, 2200Lbs soaking wet, and VERY small and aerodynamic. LS1/SBF drops right in or go turbo 13B. It's not gonna fit those tires without work though. The FC might (we got 275's in a stocker on 10" wide FR500's). It'll have IRS though.

Look into an AMC as well. I'd go with a Spirit (the 2-door hatch). The wheelwells will swallow a 10" wide and have room to spare, they are very lightweight once you pull the AMC motor/drivetrain, and they are short on a good suspension.

Instead of Starquest, how about Starlet? Not sure on the wheelwells size, but weighs nothing...

Pintos are a pretty obvious drag car choice as well, particularly if you were already thinking Mustang.

Probably, but i'd say more so with the short wheelbase of the Miata.

I believe there's a turbo BP powered miata running in the 9s. If you look on youtube for the video, the thing looks to be able to soil most peoples underwear in half a second flat. It's all over the track. High 9s is a totally different animal from low 8s.

It'd be expensive, but a massive turbo on that 3L Porsche 4-cylinder from the 968, I believe...

Or a 3 rotor turbo 1st-gen RX7... has a SRA...

Puerto Rico likes Starlets and pre-AE86 Corollas. There's some stupid fast 3tc-t powered Startlets down there.

They also like rotaries in those same cars. I'm pretty sure there's some 8 second examples of them.

Dang, and I was all ready to say Miata.

In terms of the choices- can the turbo be ADDed or must it be there from start?

If it had to be there, seems like an SVO is a good choice, with a turbo coupe right behind it- live axles love the drag strip.

If it can be added, well, there are so many good choices already posted. I'd confirm some of the PR stuff, but I've never seen anyone racing over Christmas. Keep looking, just not seeing.

And being that this is sanction drag racing, I assume it's safe to say that fuel is NOT free?

Have fun looking- so many good choices.

You can probably get the mustang car down in weight by using the turbo4 combo. That way the suspension is allready scienced out and you can stay focused on the engine combo. Does the body/ drivetrain have to match?

I think you could keep a CRX down to that weight, but you might have to use a slightly smaller engine.
