Hot Rod Lincoln-Commander Cody & others Six Days on the Road - Dave Dudley, Flying burrito Bros White Line Fever - Merle Haggard
Thought of another..."B-Movie Boxcar Blues" either by Delbert McClinton or the cover by the Blues Brothers.
Stealthtercel wrote: "Open All Night" by Bruce Springsteen ("Propped her up in the back yard on concrete blocks, for a new clutch plate and a new set of shocks") "Sweet Little 66" by Steve Earle ("Them stickers in the window ain't just for show") "You Can't Catch Me" and "No Money Down" by Chuck Berry ("The salesman told me, said: 'Trade in your Ford, and I'll sell you a car that'll eat up the road' ") and a whole bunch of stuff from SoCal from back when gasoline was 35 cents a gallon or something, like Little GTO, 409, Little Deuce Coupe, etc., etc.
oh wait there, it is!
When I was a kid in the 70s my parents divorced and my Dad left behind an LP called 'Shut Down." It's a collection of car music from the Beach Boys and other like bands. Has Mitchum's Ballad of Thunder Road, Black Leather Trousers, Car Trouble, Dead Man's Curve, Cheater Slicks, Chicken, 409, Little Deuce Coupe amongst other automotive themed songs. I played that poor record out growing up and eventually it went missing.
So the week before I leave Atlanta (2002) to return to Vermont I'm waiting for the board meeting to begin for solo 2 Atlanta region and stop into a record store going out of business. On a lark I ask if they have the album. Now, I've been looking for this for close to twenty years. Amazingly they have it and it's half priced. I had a friend put it on CD and sent a copy to my Dad. He was shocked. I play that CD constantly to the chagrin of my wife. That single record is probably the reason for my automotive enthusiasm.
I also like VH Hot for Teacher. I too have always felt that the beginning sounded like a top fuel dragster sitting at the line waiting for the tree to go green.
Some others: Hey, Little Cobra by the Rip Chords, the little-known "Kleine GTI" (spelling probably wrong, don't know German) to the tune of Little GTO, Baby Driver from the Simon & Garfunkel Bridge over Troubled Waters album (check out the sounds at the end of the track), Racing in the Streets by Emmylou Harris.
Maybelline - Chuck Berry.
Geez, somebody else remembers Vanilla Fudge - I must not be the only OF here. I forget the original writer's name (way before Commander Cody), but Hot Rod Lincoln is a real story, and the car still exists - ti was restored for the songwrtier and presented to him a few years ago. IIRC, he died a couple af years ago at the age of about 90. And the origional lyrics refer to "12 cylinders and uses 'em all", which is what the original car had - a Lincoln V12. Asleep At the Wheel also do a killer version of Hot Rod Lincoln.
Nobody's mentioned the Top Gear theme?

you missed the best Megadeth car song- 502. it was on the "so far, so good, so what?" album.. there is also "Mechanix", but that is one Megadeth song that is best forgotten about since it's the original lyrics to "The Four Horsemen" by Metallica. .and it's a pretty stupid song..
not a "car song" exactly, but it Volbeat is good cruising music..
