So, the thing i truly miss from the c5 vette is the hud. Ive been sort of thinking about trying to find a way to adapt something to my miata when i stumbled across ones on ebay for 30 bucks and under that plug into the obd2 port.http://www.ebay.com/itm/122288617070
Anybody have any experience with this kind of stuff? One to reccomend over another? Reason not to?
2000 miata base model mileage sponge is the application.
I know I can use Torque to do a heads up display. It has a setting that reverses the display so you can set your phone or tablet on the dash and let it shine straight up into the windshield
Problem with phone based is that im always on it when i. In the car. Good idea, but just wouldn't work for me.
Nothing to add, other than this is relevant to my interests
Me too. I'd actually be fine with the phone on the dash option if I could get good clear GPS/speed and maybe temp on the display. I had a loaner Escalade once, and it ruined me.

The use I have in mind would prefer more instantaneous updates... so OBDII output would be nice. Although, ideally it'd be able to be overlaid onto a... uh... selectable frontview/rearview camera feed

Update your old phone to a new one and permanently mount the old one in the car.

New HUD with golden design, more high end!
Something like this? Can't look at eBay listings at work, but can do Amazon...
I've considered them in the past, but never been that hot on them. I tried out the phone-based ones back when I was doing the app podcast, and the PAU had a built-in HUD- but I just never found either to be worth worrying about.
As an aside though- reading the descriptions of some of these things is pretty entertaining. My favorite so far (beyond ones clearly not written by someone with any experience with English...) was this one:
3 inch screen and high-definition display makes the screen more abundant and easier to read
That's from the one I linked- and it's a segmented LED display... so there's nothing remotely 'High Definition' about it...
Before i bought a riviera i thought HUD and radio controls on the steering wheel were dumb. It took me about three miles to fall in love with them.

The only thing I can think of with those is that the cars with them built into the windscreen have an advantage since the window is tinted to allow for easier use of the HUD.
Otherwise, I'd pick up a cheap tablet or phone and try out a few apps before buying some cheap standalone that may or may not have the information you need. A bonus to the cheap phone is that you could also use it for music storage and it could also help in the event of an accident since it would have a camera on it that could be used to capture any damage.
Anyone know of a obd1 version?
Ive got a windshield thats tinted at 55%. Would that be enough for reflecting the hud?
How would HUD work on a Cadillac?
In reply to slantvaliant :
I know there's a joke there that I should get because of my age, but I don't. In seriousness my mom's late 90s Cadillac had it from the factory.

Amazon fire tablet for $50 with torque. Have a tablet and a HUD if you make your mount removable.

Does OBDI even put out the data necessary for this? I thought it was far more rudimentary than OBDII... my sole experience with it being having to try and diagnose a problem with an early-90's GM van that had it.
