I've just had a first interview for a Service Advisor position at a VW dealership. I gew up with VWs but have been away from them for a while. The service manager seems to be a good guy to work for, the dealership has been around since the early '60s, I have extensive retail and wholesale customer service experience, just not a lot of recent VW experience. What should I look out for?

Important advice: If the CEL isn't on, check the bulb.

It has become hard to make any money with VWs new "no charge" maintenance plan. The big money is in Timing Belts and maintenances. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK SOMEONE FOR $1000.00 a hundred times per day. It is how you make money in this business.

What JB said. If you do not ask for the sale you won't get it. But with retail experience you already knew that. My experience with VWs was back in the ~2000 time frame and they were turds electrically. The few I have seen in service since then tend to follow that.

VW uses a lot of Delphi produced connectors now, where the problem used to be in the connectors. Now the actual components that they are being built with seem to be lacking a little. The big issue is the integration of everything into the CAN-BUS system, but instad of a multi path array there is a linear array that when one part fails it daisychains into multiple complaints. If the customer neglects to tell you the drivers window stopped working you may not really know why the alarm horn isn't working.
