Rocks hidden in sand and Cast Aluminum oil pans are not a good mix

Yup, heard it hit and shut it down immediately. I was hoping it just hit the exhaust. No such luck. No oil trail from hit to stop, but Exxon Valdez as soon as I stopped.
I was 3 1/2 hours from home, but I rented a UHaul 1-way trailer and a friend hauled it home for me, even though he went 4 hours out of his way to get me home. He is still on the road. Probably won't make it home much before 2 am.
Old road sign and some cheap hardware took care of that problem when I used to do the ProRally worker thing.
Ouch. Is a skid plate available for the car? VW MkIV's have similar low-hanging pans and there are a couple of skid plate options. Even if you don't lower the car they are considered worth it - which I proved once.

It is a MkIV VW and I have a skid plate . Unfortunately I need a hardware kit and I didn’t have it yet. :-(
On the flipside Bertie Fisher rolled his Impreza once and forgot to shut off the engine immediately.
