Any experiences good or bad?

My crate motored track car clatters like mad for 10 seconds when it's sat for a few days, but recently at least one lifter hangs for a while regardless of revs. I don't like the trend. I'm currently running Redline 10-40, and it's a turbo car. The motor is otherwise nice & tight.

I'm considering a sympathtic HLA changeout at the end of the season but the OEM's are almost $40 each through Motorsports. I see Beck Arnley aftermarket units for less than half the price and it's tempting. Any thoughts or experiences pro & con?

I've had good luck with Sealed Power and DNJ lifters in the past.

Have you considered a solid lifter conversion? Miataroadster sells the kit for $200, then you just have to get shims. There's shims that size on Summit and Jegs for reasonably cheap.

Thanks for the recommendations - I'll take a look. Have you done any racing or track days on those units?

Haven't considered solid lifters due to the cost and hassle of installing of new cams.

No track days, but a few quarter mile passes.

More than likely if you order from the dealer, they're going to give you Sealed Power units anyways.

Never tried the off-brand stuff, but I'd be tempted if I needed some. There are some really, really inexpensive versions out there on eBay and RockAuto. Given the number of engines that used these same HLAs, it makes sense than someone would start making replacements. They're easy to replace if the experiment doesn't work out.

I thought I read somewhere on the solomiata site that Kia or other brand HLAs were available at greatly reduced prices compared to the Mazda bits.

Can't find it now, but maybe you can, or maybe someone can chime in here...

I picked up one for my 323 at Autozone for, IIRC, $13.XX or something. Stricktly a commuter, no race experience. The replacement is serving me well.

Probably likely... so in that case, you're looking for a 1st gen Kia Sephia replacement. (Maybe others, but don't know off the top of my head.0

Mazda KLs use the same lifters.

It's true - 1995 Kia Sephia GS or something like that. That's old info, it predates the availability of aftermarket options. Now it's probably cheaper to go with the latter.

Hey,

Thanks for all the input. On the Kia front - $7.00 a pop ( ITM solids) is a little too brave for me....
