Is engine/motor a thing? I mean, I know in Britspeak that "motor" can refer to a whole car, but why would anyone get their panties/knickers in a wad over the use of motor to mean engine and vice versa? What's the difference?

Well, an easy test of that is to ask if the phrase "Electric engine" makes sense. Nope. A motor is understood to be electric, while an engine is anything else.
"Steam motor" anyone?

Engine: A machine with moving parts that converts power into motion.
