I was driving back from Frisco yesterday after the first big rain storm of the season. There was some water on the road but I didn't see anything out of the ordinary.
Driving on 101s I turn off towards San Jose and the road was flooded, I hit what must have been 6-8inches of water going about 45-50mph and the car started to stall out. This was not the place i wanted to break down in a rain storm so I limped off the road, the truck was still running but wounded. I floored the pedal to try and clear the problem and the truck was still missing badly. Well I decided to hell with it if I going to get hit and killed I might as well try to limp towards the next exit, the hood. Well I start up the road doing a mighty 15mph, the truck feels like it is on its last leg, but it eventually starts pulling through and soon I'm up to speed. I decided to get home and just keep the truck running. Well I made it.
I didn't know if I sucked water or shorted the alternator so I pulled the air filter today. It is wet and there is 1/4in off water in the filter housing. The housing on the pickup is near to top of the hood so water must have splashed up under the hood and into the intake, thank god the pickup didn't suck more and get hydrolocked. Hell of a way to clean an engine bay!
Almost killed the toyota but it lives on. Watch out for standing water on the roads.
