I have been less than pleased with TunerStudio and MLV. TunerStudio randomly locks up because of its "context sensitive" parts, and MLV simply doesn't work right since it doesn't recognize VE tables that aren't 16x16.
Today, I just realized that the reason why Firefox has been acting funny is because all browser history is gone. Several years' worth of history. The time that coincides with the browser reset is the last time I tried to use MLV, which opened up a window by its own initiative.
Rule one: NEVER FARK WITH MY COMPUTER AND OPEN PROGRAMS BY YOURSELF.
So, I am done with TS/MLV. I'm considering it to be malware. Are there any good MSWin alternatives? If not, anything good for Linux? I'll convert my laptop if I have to.
To be honest, I still prefer MegaTune but there's no support for it anymore and I'm not longer running B&G MS1, it's some flavor of MS2/Extra that is newer than MegaTune stopped getting updates.
Have you posted about this over on the msextra forums?
I have been using the software for years with no issue. I have the pay to play version.
I suspect that there may be more to this than a tuner studio issue.
It just plain never worked right for me. My laptop is not particularly crappy, it's a HP unit with a 2.4GHz Core2 Duo, and 4 gigs of memory, running Win7 Professional (SP1). A nice workhorse of a laptop.
That is why I never paid for the non-nagware version. I could not justify spending a hundred+ bucks on software that didn't function correctly.
I use TS/MLV at work with no problems, but we also use it exclusively with systems with all the bells and whistles. (Our work laptop is very similar to my personal one except it has less memory)
When I was running MS1 I ran an 8x8 map. With MS2/Extra I run a 12x12 map, and to be honest my engine would be just fine with a 6x6 and maybe even a 4x4 map. Rotaries don't have a torque curve so much as they have a torque plateau. I had to invent a bunch of useless cells to run 12x12, which irks me because they are totally not needed. So clearly the problem is the software, and one thing you learn if you tune at all is that you need to define and address the problem, and trying to fix a problem by addressing things that aren't the problem just leaves you with more problems.
I can get the engine to idle at 1000rpm if I'm willing to live with no alternator charging and no vacuum for the brakes, it is most happy at 1400-1500. 12x12 is too much mapping, why should I make even more cells to tune just to make MLV happy? The 600 cell is just there to pad things out, the engine never runs below 800-900rpm and all of those numbers are just numbers I threw in. The 4500-9000 cells are practically identical and could just as easily be represented by one cell, and I added the 10k cell just to richen things up in the "OHE36 M3" range to slow the engine down... which is an existing function in the rev limiter code, so completely unnecessary.
TS/MLV is pissing me off so much that I am thinking of switching to HPTuners, if you follow me. Or, I still have a 48DHLA and attendant manifolding.
Let's see, Firefox just released a fairly major update and that can result in stupid behavior from time to time.
Not too mention Microsoft updates were released today, yada yada yada....
Is all of the supporting software up to date on your system? Java, etc?
The only issue I've had has been having to run it as an Admin to get access to the serial port to view the data. That is my issue though and how I configure my box.
Phil Tobin is pretty responsive on MSExtra and Facebook and might have an answer to your plight.
Have you tried using MegaTune? Does it "work properly" on your computer?
The problem with Ms is that it serves many masters. For your application you are probably correct in that there are under necessary things. However what is un necessary for your application are things that I use and have a need for.
All that is a secondary issue to the bugs you are describing. I would first try a completely new tune file. Completely re enter the set up parameters do not copy anything from the old file.
I would also try a different computer. I hated my Xp machine. It was only when I went to win 7 Ultima on an Asus i7 with 8gb ram did everything seems to work really well. Your computer matches the specs of my laptops that I retired at least 3 years ago.
Also fire fox may be the issue. I hate it. It has caused more than a coupple issues in my office with a coupple of employees using it. Got rid of that CF of a Web browser and no more issues. They cried and pouted for a week or three but to bad. Ithe is just not a mainstream browser that plays well with some software. I have settled on chrome with no issues.

I have had FF updates disabled since 2013 or so. They kept mucking around with the UI so I stifled that mess. (Ask me what I think about Chrome. Go on, ask me. Get a Sledge-O-Matic rated vitriol shield to contain the spittle from the voluminous rant that will ensue. The rant will extend to Youtube, Android, and anything else related to the ivory-tower b**kheads at Google)
Disclaimer: I'm not a Luddite. I don't mind change when change is good. I'm probably the only person who liked the 3.0 update for HPTuners. But... okay, I'll wait for you to raise your plastic shielding before I continue...)
Have to say that your issues are not the norm. I would blow out and do fresh installs of ts and mlv. There were some java changes awhile ago that may be causing you issues if you have some older stuff on there.
Also TS autotune works so well that you could tune a 50x50 table relatively quickly.
As Paul said, these issues are a bit odd - I use Firefox too on my work computer, and you can imagine how many times a day I need to use MegaLogViewer. I haven't seen it delete any of my Firefox folders. If you're having bugs, contact support@efianalytics.com; Phil and Bryan will get back to you very quickly.
That said, there is MegaTunix; they recently discontinued updates to it, but it should support most versions of MS2/Extra.

That's a really bad idea considering security holes get patched on a regular basis for these browsers.

Adblock eliminates problems.
I realize I have been a bit hotheaded. But IMO any software that starts up other software without your prompting is malware. Maybe FF threw up when it tried to open a webpage "cold" while not connected to anything. I don't know. I do know that this behavior is unacceptable and is the final straw given the bugginess of the software to begin with.
Im thinking the only way MLV would open a browser window is to access the Help wiki.....
It launches java but not a browser without help or some other user prompt... Maybe the free version does? I paid for ts before it was even for general sals so I am not sure...
The free version does to take you to the purchase website. Not exactly a huge issue and it has never wiped my history, that sounds like another, unrelated issue.
Oracle, Flash, Reader among others also open browsers after you update them (an update was just released for Java, Firefox, etc.).
Update your Firefox and allow it to update, you're playing but with fire and being a bit hard headed, even with Adblock installed (NoScript is also a good idea).

I believe the command to register MLV will make it call your browser to go to the registration page.
