Besides Alfas, what other small engines have an aluminum block and head? (Bonus points for engines with cross flow heads).

Uh, Miata?

Is this a trick question?

Oh, and if we're talking physically small as opposed to small displacement, LS1.

I don't think the LS1 is that small. A 1uzfe is all aluminum with 6 bolt mains (4 stud 2 bolt supposedly) and physically much smaller

Well.... to be that pedantic jerk... no.

The current MX-5, yes. Miatas, no.

Saturn LL0 (S-series DOHC) one of the lightest engines out there.

I would like to build a hybrid BMW motor using a aluminium M52 block from a Z3. The BMW I-6s aren't small though.

Saturn (and it's insanely light - too bad it doesn't make any power)

The latest BMW I-6s (N52) are magnesium blocks with aluminum sleeves.

I'm not sure my wallet even wants to know that this might have been possible. I do know that some of the 2zzge parts cross over roughly to the 4age. Not sure if anyone has managed to put the zz engine in a longitudinal rwd setup though.

Well if one wishes to go down that path, a lot of engines can have and aluminum block.
