...has flown over my house twice within the past half hour. It's a very cool sight and sound. The B17 is visiting a nearby airport for the weekend.

Way cool!

We don't live far from the Yankee Air Museum in Ypsi so we get fly overs from time to time.

You can hear them before you see them usually- they have a very unique sound.

In fact, I think that plane lives over here!

Nice! I got twice-daily flyovers in my back yard (at alarmingly low altitude) by Aluminum Overcast in formation with 4 AT-6 Texans and an F4-U Corsair during the 4th of July weekend. When I heard them coming I would literally run outside like a kid after the ice cream man. I honestly couldn't tell you another time I felt such giddy awe as an adult as the first time they passed over, completely unexpectedly. I could have jumped and giggled, but I managed to barely restrain myself.

Not the same plane- the one in Ypsi is the Yankee Lady.

Still way cool though!

Usually you can do a "walk through" tour for a relatively reasonable rate. (Seems like it was a $10 donation IIRC) Its well worth it. I'd love to go on a flight, but seems like those were in the $400 range.

I thought the Fortress used Wright-Cyclones? But I get your meaning. :)

I love b17s. Still a b29 is just so much more. They almost have our local tbf done!

You guys are right. I was confusing the 17 with the 29 and 25. Both are Pratt powered.

You are thinking of Curtiss-Wright. (very similar engines of course)

The B-29 is Wright R-3350 powered. The B17 and B25 also have Wright engines.

I believe they did re-engine FiFi though (the only flying B19) so it might have pratts (the 3350 were very unreliable in B29 service).

Nope. She still has her 3350s.

I always love spotting old warbirds in the air over San Antonio whenever there is an upcoming air show. It's pretty neat.

Stinkin' love the air cooled radials though. I live in flight path for DCA, and can't help but look up every time I hear a plane. Can't help it.

Why are your engines on upside-down?

Nope..Aluminum Overcast is part of the fleet of the EAA in Oshkosh, WI. For more details, see http://www.airventuremuseum.org/flightops/b17/

Have a personal fondness for the B17 as my (now-departed) father was on the crew of a B17 in Europe during WWII.
