I am looking to get a 4x4 and have narrowed it down to 1 or 2 vehicles.

The crazy part:

I have complied a list of mod I want to do to the vehicle which cost the same as the vehicles.... For example I am looking at vehicles in the $3k to $5k range and I am at $3300 in mods+shipping without bumpers and winch and at that point I will be in the $4500 range.

But it will be more capable than anything I can buy at the vehicle + mods price point.

I feel like I am crazy but then I remember people put $15k worth of engine in a $1500 vehicle to drag race in. Am I crazy?

That depends. Can I have a ride?

Mr. Chaos asks if he's "crazy"?

Yes, you are crazy. What you should do is spend $8,000 on a used Camry and remain bored and unfufilled until you pass away.

You will have 8 g's in the vehicle you really want. It doesnt seem crazy. If its the budget that worries you most 4x4 vehicle accessories can be had used (but buyer beware of course) or buying a vehicle with some of the mods you want already done is usually cheaper.

Can you afford it? Do you want to spend your time building it?

if both, = yes, then no.

if either = no, then yes.

In reply to mad_machine:

I am leaning toward a Suzuki Sidekick/Geo Tracker or a Jeep YJ, though I am really not a fan of used jeep prices so the Sidekick or Tracker is at the top of the list.

The Sidekick is a great little vehicle and can do some really amazing things. The Jeep has a strong frame and a body that can be swapped out when damaged/rusted. In the end, the functionality and ruggedness of the Jeep, along with a HUGE aftermarket, would be the deciding factor for me.

Obligatory flying Jeep photo...

Sidekick/Trackers are body on frame as well. Previous post seemed to suggest otherwise.

This sounds a lot less crazy with the yj than with a tracker. Where would even find a $4000 tracker? I dont think ive ever seen one for more than $1500, and thats asking price. Every tracker ive ever seen sell was for three digits. Im not saying they suck, im just saying buy one for $400, and the only accessory you should buy for it is a cooler full of beer. Take the doors off and call it a day. Name it Ned Beatty for the way you plan to treat in the woods.
