I previously just rented them with the NASA guys but BMW does not have rentals and borrowing one from someone with a broken car only works once or twice.
So... I am in need of one... first does any one have one for sale cheaply? Salanis... you are moving to Germany... jes? ;)
Second... is the signal the same for the kart models and a car models? There is a huge price discrepancy ($160 -> $399). Can I take the one off my kid's race kart and use it with BMWCCA and NASA?
The kart models should work - the difference is the speed with which you cross the timing pickup loop and how low to the ground you can mount the transponder. The kart transponders have a smaller range, but if you mount them low on the car they'll work. Make sure you don't have metal between the transponder and track surface!! I mounted mine in front of the wheel well below a frame rail using an existing unused mounting hole (was maybe the washer fluid reservoir mount) and it worked great.
Edit: I think the model number is the max speed at which it works going over the timing loop, but someone else can confirm.
My new to me race car had one installed already. If you buy used AMB will swap it's registration over to your account so you can see your miserable - scratch that - "heroic" results real time on mylaps/com. It's about $40 for them to do it.
Look on racingjunk, SCCA, NASA forums etc.
Yes,
you can buy them used pretty cheap. I would recommend that if you buy used, buy the hard wired one. A rechargeable one may have reached the end of it's battery cycles by the time it's sold.
What part of the country are you located in? I might be able to help you out.

I have a couple weeks before I need it so I'm keeping an eye on the classifieds listed above.
