197hp?

Yeah, it's still speculation, but that's pretty much in-line with the specualtion over the last few years. My plan to trade in the Speed 3 for this next year is now gone.
Unless a test drive reveals some "ZOMG dis uh-mAzing" response or something. But still, that's such a paltry number.
in for the I like slow cars crowd

haha, just wait for the final body shape to come out, expect bland...
i think its a good thing. For the general public, cars need less power. Its extremely annoying for someone to put a huge amount of effort into getting in front of you then brake hard and go around the freeway on-ramp you can take easily at 50 mph going 25, then floor it once the road straightens out again when you are in a car with half the power theirs has.
197 at the wheels? I don't think that sounds bad. especially if it comes from scion (the tuner side of toyo)

OEM ratings are not at the wheels...

Look at Buicks. Typically found going at least 10 under the limit, and/or hogging the left lane at absurdly slow speeds. The 3800 is not a weak engine, and many of them are supercharged.
But then again, I'm biased. My SE-R's 140hp feels like a lot to me, and I'm about to pick up my third 1.6 Miata, so clearly a lot of horsepower isn't that huge a deal to me.

200 hp is about all the previous generation WRX had in stock form, nobody accuses them of being dull to drive.

197 to the rear wheels, not at the rear wheels.
200hp sounds like a lot to me!
But then, I'm stuck in the 90's at the moment, my most powerful v8 car has 260hp.

plus it ought to have fewer drivetrain losses being only rwd. in theory at least. plus it is still hoping to be lighter right?

Yeah but Toyota as of late can take a 7 layer Chocolate cake and turn it into white bread.
They really have become the car company of bland.
That includes the Scion and Lexus lines. What 3 decent looking/exciting cars out of what, 20 models?

Oh, I agree Toyota can suck the fun out of many things, but at almost 200 hp, I can't see lack of power being the real issue. 300 hp doesn't make the current Camry fun.
I figure it won't be long until someone swaps a 2JZ-GTE in there for top end battles.

I'd say 197 ain't bad for a NA 2.0 ... this thing has always been genesis coupe territory not mustange or 370Z
i wanna say the original ae86 gts had, what, 130~ish?
It's supposed to be the modern day version of a performance Corolla, right? Doesn't seem like it should have a lot more power than that, at least from the factory.
197 is plenty...for about 2300 pounds. Weight is where I fear they're going to fail.
I really hope I'm wrong.
It all comes down to the curb weight...
All the Scions are underpowered, that just leaves more room for you to make improvements.
Since the car was developed with Toyota for that market I've never expected good HP numbers. I have been expecting something better for the Subie version tho.
Is this the car you are talking about?

If so I might have to take a look at this when it comes out. Looks nice to me.

I remember my '73 Capri being rather quick. About 2200 pounds and 107 net hp. I think this will be fine.

Exactly. I'm betting this car is going to be very close to 3000lbs.
Even the newest Mini is ~2600-2700lbs?
