During the annual Sick Week, a five-day-long drag-and-drive competition, longtime $2000 Challenge competitor Andrew Nelson crashed a Vortec 4200-powered Volvo PV5444.

So glad that he's going to be okay! That was a horrific wreck and the safety program the Nelson's did (car and PPE) definitely saved his life. Here's to a fast and complete recovery!

Yikes! So glad that he is okay. My PV544 was skittery in a crosswind, and I never got it over 80 MPH, much less a 9.1 quarter!

That is the most severe bank-shot I have ever seen. I was expecting to see an in-lane pole-vault with maybe a right hand side exit, not an off-track parabolic arrival at the other side of the track.

I really feel bad now. I was one of several urging Calvin and Andrew to stick with the stock rods. They were proud of the success they had with Stock bottom engine.
Previously the rods had failed after a 40 PSI dyno run. But it made 824 horsepower prior to that at 30 PSI.
The Datsun got the after market rods etc.

Any idea what happened? I saw an accident one time like that in pro stock when a brake rotor failed and locked that corner. The replay didn't show much on the top end but obviously he crossed the track pretty quickly.
Thank God the car was built well, truly a testament to their thoroughness.

Reportedly the connecting rods blew out the bottom and oiled the track. The shape of the car caused it to lift at near 145 mph. And the rest is history.
Here's to a complete, full and speedy recovery. In addition to speed, I've always respected you all for your emphasis with regards to safety as well. I'm sad that the emphasis has shown it's value, but am glad that it's been something that has always been something of the utmost deserved respect with regards to your builds.

Look up my friend of mine, Frank Soldridge, on the tubes of you. He so the same impact into the same wall just at the 1/8th mile mark at 200mph after a door blew off.

Notice the cage is not shifted in any direction. The body panels on the other hand go any direction plus smashed in.
