Agreed. I'm shocked they didn't do the twins considering they already have an autocross class dedicated to them but as I've said before, I think this coincides with the new Spec MX5 class that was released.

I'm a father of two, and I usually get $5k/year to put towards a build, max.
The father of two thing kills the NC. The V8 mustang is E36 M3 for gas mileage.
They both suck for OneLap (the NC because it lacks space/cargo, the Mustang... because the S197 has always been a rearpacker there), and GridLife (where I spend half my time, and they have a much better vibe than any SCCA deal I've been to.)

isn't one lap more than $5k after you buy the required tires pay the entry fees and car prep to say nothing of the fuel and lodging/meal costs throughout the trip?
I always kinda of thought of one lap as a somewhat of a luxury level trip. I.E. somebody who can justify the likely $10k cost for the trip can likely afford to buy a competitive car (i.e. GT-R)
I ask because I have always wanted to consider one-lap but honestly didn't think i could afford/justify the cost.

Honestly, the hardest thing right now about OneLap, is getting registered.
Also, there's not really "one answer" for how much OneLap costs. I don't usually count food in a OneLap budget... you've gotta eat in a week any ways. Maybe it costs $10k to get a Mustang prepped for OneLap... which is all the more reason not to take one, imho.
and maybe it's just the people that have taken them recently, and their particular prep...
but outside of Roush/BeaverNuggetBilly's 2011 OneLap... I'm more familiar with the above result. And this is what you'll be looking at in-class:
which, I'm not all that concerned about "being competitive"... but if I can be that uncompetitive, I might as well do it in something cheaper, with cheaper consumables. If you can get under 2800#s and 200hp (~30mpg highway), then you're looking at $200-225/tire, not including the 25% discount that has been the norm (2024 Tire Policy isn't out yet, so TBD). $1000 for brakes, $1000 for wheels. And, as the above Fits/Rio/Mazda2's show... you'll still have an ability to be as "competitive".
So...
Setup costs: $2000
OneLap Costs: ($4000 + $1000 + ($225*5*0.75) + $1000 {hotels} + $700 {fuel} ) = $7550
now, team has to be at least two: $3775/person
but, it can be 3 people: $2515
(there's a bunch of other benefits to being 3-up on OneLap)
that might be a lot, compared to one weekend of TT.Nats... but I don't know if it counts as luxury. Maybe that's just because I'm a Bourgeoisie Buffalo?

I have the perfect candidate donor car but unfortunately after reading more about the penskes and their constant need for rebuilding if you do ANY street driving at all, I backed out.
I bought an '06 mustang when the class was announced. I bought wheels, and tires, and am waiting for the suspension to become available via strano parts. My first competitive event should be road America in April.

Its been awhile since I last contacted them, but basically it was something ridiculous as them needing to be rebuilt for every few thousand street miles (I think I even remember the key # as 1000 miles). They're legitimate race shocks, similar to the Xidas but even Xidas didn't have these crazy service intervals.

My calculations are even worse. Tracks are a round trip of 250-400 miles for me. That's basically two track weekends for me.

Looking forward to it. I have a feeling it's time to move on from my 128i, and both of these piqued my interest as a nice step up. With the Penske info above, the Mustang seems a somewhat likely venture, especially since in a sucker for a V8.

SCCA rules encourage it by controlling modifications instead of a performance envelope IMHO.

Based on initial feedback, you get to choose between rebuilding miata shocks every six months or replacing mustang rear axles every six months.

I get a lot of this is about partnerships with suppliers but there are ways to do that and keep the costs down.
With that said I think the concept will be highly successful.

I still find this funny that they are doing the same thing I've done since I started, but limiting it to two cars. One car in multiple disciplines. That's how us "poors" do it all the time.

Way way back when the Earth was still cooling and GRM only printed in black and white, there was an article about project cars over the years. One was an early 80s Civic. The owner ran the same car in mostly the same spec at autocrosses, hillclimbs, road races, and I think a couple other things. Not necessarily built to the limit of the rules, but in "real grassroots" fashion (quote from article) he was out there getting seat time and enjoying the hell out of just getting out there and doing it.
