Cool - thanks for the heads up. Of course, I just started a thread on that subject and came back here to say the Hagerty/RLI policies were much less expensive than whatever I was looking at before. I'll try to find that thread of yours.

Fair enough. I really meant this in a positive way and not holier than thou, as I did 18 days of HPDE this year and SO many guys I know volunteered all weekend to do half a day and were sad about not having track time but they all had huge payments (and high running costs) to cover.
It's a personal decision. I'd rather be able to afford to track a miata than to NOT able to have fun with an RS, STi, Cayman, etc. I also work an unstable job (contract dayjob + photographer on weekends) so for me having a 6-mo emergency fund is MANDATORY before I spend anything on fun stuff.
Finances aside, I'd still vote miata as a starter HPDE car. The costs and SO much lower both for purchase and recurring, and it's just a better vehicle to track than an e90 or similar.
Blaise, I understand the message and where it's coming from. You're not wrong and I do appreciate it, I just do things a little differently.
Nothing I'm making payments on is ever going on a track and as such I don't think I'll ever purchase a policy specifically for that purpose. If I can't afford for it to come home in a ball, I'm stuck with autocross.
I would really like to do a track day, but the idea of this thread was less to have a track animal and more to have a fun vehicle that I could potentially supplement my income with. As such, the thread title is a bit misleading in hindsight.
I like the big black SUV in place of the work truck as an idea, but it would be nearly impossible to keep clean enough for Lyft duty and a hassle to put all my gear in and take it out every time I go to work. It is definitely a possibility in the future if my work gets cleaner.
I wouldn't mind doing any of the things Robbie mentions, but marketing a service when I'm out of town so frequently just doesn't seem workable. I can really only set appointments a day or two out and I don't think too many people are willing to deal with that. In terms of other ideas for side hustles, I have thought about doing woodwork and selling it on etsy or a similar platform. Trouble is, I don't have a shop or even a real address at the moment.
EDIT: I definitely have considered getting into the local Makerspace and using their stuff to make cool things.
ATS' are tiny in the rear seat FYI.

Not sure that something that's large enough to qualify as a luxury lyft would also be considered a "fun street car".
Also have to wince at "being comfortable with credit card balances that look like a mortgage". Ouch. That's the road to financial ruin right there...

(Deleted response). Don't think anything I say will help. Debt will never solve or help anything.
