Mrs dx took her 12 jetta in to get serviced yesterday and found out about a $139 a month lease special on the 16 Jettas. I know that they have a turbo motor standard on em now. Any issues or feedback on the 1.4 turbo? It would be quite a bit cheaper than her current payment also..

Current payment has to be considered first.

All new 1.4 turbo... The specs sound impressive.
I want one for my 1997 Jetta and my 1986 GTi... lol

If she'll stay in the mileage limits, that doesn't sound like a bad idea at all. How well equipped is the new one? Is it like the $14,999 specials they used to have with a stick and crank windows?

I had a '16 for a rental in Texas last week. 41 mpg at 75 mph (no a/c), and 38 mpg in the hill country with the a/c. A good car for the masses. The very first thing I would do is change the shocks, and hope that changed the vague-ness in slightly spirited driving. The 1.4t is a good motor, with good power in a usable range.

The brakes were a mixed bag. Sometimes they were more than adequate, and sometimes it felt like it took more pedal travel than necessary to engage them, usually in heavy stop-and-go traffic.

Well, there were no known issues with the 2.0 TSI in my 2011 GTI when I bought it as a new car. Heck, even Consumer Reports RECOMMENDED it! Now, on the verge of expiration of the VW power train warranty, there are issues aplenty. Worst being a crap design cam chain tensioner, known to fail and cause Mr. Piston to meet Mr. Valve. VW won't acknowledge this issue, other than version K of the tensioner is now out. Well done, fellas. Others include failing pcv modules blowing out tinfoil supported rear crank seals, crumbling plastic flapper valves in the intake manifolds (warranty extended on those), failing high pressure fuel pumps (warranty extended also), and failing fuel injectors (also ext warranty). Oh, and the joy of carbon build up cleaning on the backs of intake valves at $750 a pop if you don't want to take this on yourself. Yup ... Good times. Oh, and CR now has my generation GTI on the "avoid at all costs" list of potential used cars. Thanks, folks .... Glad I used your previous recommendation as part of my decision making process in 2011.

All this aside, I LOVE driving this car. I just want some semblance of reliability. Please ......

Not sure on the 1.4. There's a exhaust cam wipe issue on the n/a motors

A friends mother just got a new vw beetle with the 1.4t and he is VERY impressed buy the motor, not enough miles to notice any problems though.

In reply to einy: 2.0 FSI here...I feel your pain. At least you don't have the cam follower issues to contend with on top of that!

Mrs. DX came home with a 14 Jetta S last night with the 2 liter 8 valve motor. She drives too much for a lease and this one just was traded in with 10k miles on it and the price was right..

That's true, but dammit ... The TSI was supposed to fix all the FSI's shortcomings!!! German engineering, my *** !!
