I just got ebay slims. 3 inch thick though. I have yet to install them but they seem decent for the price. If I wasn't such a mizer I'd gone with some from jegs of summit. The ebay ones were straight blades instead of curved so they wont flow as much air do to their lower area.
From what I've read, A lot of the eBay fans do not push the air they advertise. Siliconeintakes.com is often recommended for reasonably priced fans.
I run one of the $30 ebay fans on my RX-7. Never had an overheat problem. Even autocrossing in 95 degree heat.
First of all, that site is AWESOME.
Second of all, don't these look exactly like the ebay fans? With the same absurd claims for flow rating?

Siliconeintakes is an "ebay brand," but for the record, i've spent a lot of money there, and have not one thing bad to say about them.
Keep in mind that the torque of the motor matters. Have a look at how the flow ratings drop off when dealing with pressure - SPAL publishes these numbers. Slim fans might perform well when blowing in free air, but as soon as they start having to suck through a radiator (or a radiator, an AC condensor and an intercooler) they'll fall down.
Slim fans are great if you don't have space for anything else, but you can't beat a big fat motor if you want to move air. No matter what fans you have, put 'em on a good shroud. Makes all the difference.
I'd say hit the junkyard and scrounge around for something that will work. OEM fans are almost always better than the aftermarket fans, the motors are stronger, and even the blades and housings seem to be made of better stuff. I'd take a good used OEM fan over an internet cheapie any day.
i got a 16" Hayden fan from a junkyard for $10 that keeps my Regal at 175 degrees on the hottest summer days.
I got a 14" Hayden at Autozone for $49 for my racecar when the $24 ebay unit crapped out after about 2 days.
I'm trying to decide between ebay stuff and Summit Racing stocked fans. The price difference would be $70 vs $130

Would it be possible to use two smaller fans? That usually lets you put the motors on each side of the crank or waterpump pulley on the engine. I did that with the MG, gave me a lot more room than a big single would have. As a bonus, it covers more of my rectangular radiator. It all depends on your packaging, of course.

I've got an autozone fan turned into an air pusher in front of the condensor and radiator in my minivan to help with moving air. It moves a surprising amount of air for the light current draw and has a taste for human blood thanks to me sticking my hand too close to see how much air it was moving.

Yes! My plan is to run dual 2"x8" fans.
I've read a lot of bad comments about mounting your fans directly on the radiator/condenser coil with those through-the-fins things. Things like "my radiator repair man says those things keep him in business..." Just saying.

I was concerned about this, to be honest. So I'm glad you mentioned it.
It also means that your fans only draw through the area of the core directly under the fan. That's only about 50% of the core area. Shrouds rock.
Yes, it's going to be damn near impossible for me to fit shrouds. That's the really crappy part.
I'm toying with the idea of a water sprayer that uses fluid from the washer reservoir. A la STi intercooler sprayer. It's just an idea that is floating around in my head.

How so? Do the push-through mounts cause leaking, do they melt from extreme heat, etc? I ask because I have a Taurus e-fan whose shroud covers the entire finned area of an FC RX-7 Koyorad radiator. I lack the skillz or tools to make mounting brackets so I was going to use the push-though mounts instead.
