I drilled one of 5 out and now have to time-sert or helicoil that one. The other 4 I tried welding a nut to and just went backwards.

Im now throwing in the towel and asking for professional help. Only caveat would be is that it’s a free motorcycle engine so I can’t be spending several hundred dollars...

I REALLY don’t want this to be yet another failed project in my life.

Anyone?

What's your time frame on this?    Maybe a local machine shop, or a good muffler repair shop.  I had the muffler guy near me get exhaust studs out of a head done cheap.  He also welded up a Super Trappe exhaust for my Harley.

If not, when school opens, run it down to their auto shop class.  Might do it as part of a "learning experience".

There’s a place in New Hampshire that burns broken cylinder head bolts out of Porsche engines. I forget what the process is called but it’s probably electro-something. I’ll see if I can find the name. There was an article on the place in Excellence a few years ago.

Electro-discharge machining?  EDM?  A good tool and die shop will be set up to do that for you.

funny, this video just popped up in my YouTube feed:

Simple and Easy Broken Tap Extraction Nitric Acid vs. Alum

The guy is funny but the language is sometimes not family friendly so the link instead of embedding.

Yup, that's it, EDM.

In reply to Dirtydog :

I’m not in a big rush but I turned 48 yesterday and I REALLY want to have ONE success in life (aside from having a great wife and three awesome kids).

But with a family, I’m trying not to be selfish too. Ever price a high-end football helmet and cleats? Never mind the two cheerleaders.

Any idea what four motorcycle exhaust bolts would cost with EDM?

We have already exhausted all of my knowledge on EDM.

Somewhere between Free.99 and $150/hr plus fixturing depending on your level of homeboy hookup.
