Hi everyone,

So I picked up a Garmin Virb Ultra 30 awhile ago with the intention to use it for autocross days and cruises with my car.

I will probably pickup a good headrest post mount at some point and I may come to the conclusion that I just like the viewpoint better and can see driver input, etc. but it's also likely that I'll be taking cruise footage to and from car shows as well. So basically, The camera WILL get mounted to the car with a suction cup on the exterior regularly too. So what I'm wondering is what suction mount I should buy.

I'm debating if it's worth spending $40 on the "official" Gopro mount and paying $25 more than a knock off on amazon and whether or not I'm just paying for their logo being on it, or if the quality is that much better.

I don't want to find out the hard way that it was a dumb ass idea to try and save $25 when it falls off at freeway speed!

I will use a tether and attach that to my side view mirror, but even that could have it's issues. I imagine that if it came loose at 80 mph it could end up whacking my fender or door pretty good, especially if I didn't notice it right away and it had a chance to bounce off repeatedly due to speed or wind.

So what do you guys use?

If you're not using an official Gopro branded one can you tell me who makes yours? Thanks!

I don't have a knockoff, but I will say that my official one failed. It was only one failure, at low speed, but it cost me the camera. Try to tether the camera to the car, cheap mount or not

I have one of those knock off mounts for my virb. It works pretty well. I always keep it tethered, I only had it fail once but that was in paddock. It seems if your surface is clean and smooth it works. This was shot with the suction mount:

In efforts to make switching camera angles easier I have moved to using the tapped on clip style mounts.

Teather, theather, theather. They will fall off. All of them.

My name brand go pro mounts all suck. All of them. The mounts that came with my 40 dollar knock of go pro's have been downright awesome.

Considering my knockoff camera with everything cost what just the go pro suction cup mount cost, I'd say go on Amazon and buy a cheap camera kit, then have A backups of all the pieces and B a backup camera.

I recently drove 700 miles with a side view mirror attached to the truck by a harbor freight double suction cup handle. It was at least as solid as the regular mirrors, and no issues.

My friends have had good luck with those triple-cup flex mounts, so I'll probably be grabbing one of those. My knockoff suction mount sucked.

Kind of high $$ but, this setup was good for 130mph for me. Probably only need one of the small suction cups for a Go-Pro.

I have used a RAM mount without failure, but I always tether the camera.

I use the RAM gopro mount. But I do agree with tethering the camera if it's on the outside of the vehicle.

I've been rocking a $7 eBay suction mount for the last year, call me brave but untethered and numerous autox events, no failures

My original one has only ever come off from someone trying to stick it to ancient rough faded paint, or forgetting to press the button on the back to squeeze the air out from under the cup. When properly applied it's NEVER come off, even in offroad rallies.
