Just bought one, haven't even picked it up yet, wanted one for years, probably over paid, don't care, glad to see GRM has their article they did a few years ago on these cars, should be fun.

I've had 2 (well, they were 91+ 740s, so same exact thing, also had a '88 sedan) and they are great cars.
Slap on some larger injectors, a wide band, 3" turbo to tip exhaust, and a big ol' intercooler.
I put in a 16T turbo from a V70R and turned the boost up to 20psi and had a super fun wagon.
Thanks, not sure yet where to get the exhaust, when I went to IDP's site I just found standard exhaust parts, maybe I need to look harder. I plan on adding a manual boost controller and a better gauge, some lowering and suspension braces along with a mild tint job on the windows. Car has 79k miles on it. I drove one a few years ago with a manual trans, I regret not buying that one although it was beat, Im wondering if I can put a manual into this one. It seems that there are some different manuals that can be adapted but I have limited mechanical skills and I want a clean installation, not a hackjob. I will get the car next week and enjoy it for a little while before I do any of the above though..
I just sold mine to tuna55 on here. For exhaust go to the forum at turbobricks.com and look for "thelostartof". He sells complete turbo-back 3"kits or just the pipes so you can source the cans locally. Lots of other great info there too. I have a few parts that didn't go with the car if you need anything. A sunroof visor would look good on that car
I have an '89 745T as my daily driver. These are great cars - fun, quick and practical all in one.
As mentioned, Turbobricks is the place to get all kinds of info on modifications. I've got a manual tranny, ipd Turbo cam, and I've upped the boost to ~16psi. Everything else is pretty much stock, but it gets up and goes quite well. A bigger turbo and exhaust really work wonders on these cars.
Love Volvo wagons. It's on my list of must haves one day. Unfortunately there are about 25 other must haves on that list also.
11110000, post some pics and clarify, you mention everything else is stock but then you commented on a bigger turbo and exhaust, did you not perform those mods?
In reply to plance1:
Right - everything else is stock, but a bigger turbo and exhaust really wake these things up. These are the next items on my list - the late model OEM turbo manifold (1990+) flows better than what I've got, a nice T3/T4 hybrid will supply efficient boost, and a 3" turbo-outlet-back exhaust with minimal restriction can easily develop enough power to make bad stuff happen inside the transmission.
I really need to take some pics of the wagon - it's a bit battered, but runs strong! I just added some 'Prancing Moose' stickers, too...
Yep, I have a '93 940 turbo wagon. Great daily driver, 200k miles and going strong, still feels like a luxury car. Handles great with a few minor suspension mods. I left the engine stock on this one. Sadly the manual trans was not available in USA. There are some good swaps out there but it looks like a lot of time to do it right.
I drove a manual trans station wagon, but if you say the 940's didn't come with one then it must have been a 740. Also, correct me if I m wrong, but I recall seeing "intercooled" written on the back of these cars, but not others, does this mean that some are intercooled and some aren't or does it mean they are all intercooled but some years and models didn't have it written on the car?
All the 700/900 turbos were intercooled. It's a nice big intercooler too. I dunno about the badges. If it was a manual trans, it was a 740 before 1990 or something. The only real difference between the 700 and 900 was a bit of rounding of the front end sheet metal.
Well OK, there is a turbo difference too, I don't recall exactly what year, but the early cars had a Garrett turbo that came on later and made more peak boost. The later cars have a smaller Mitsubishi turbo that comes on really soon but makes less boost at high RPM. The little Mitsu is great in a daily driver with an automatic, right-now torque, but not what you would want in a track car.
91 & 92 740s are identical to 940s.
There are I think 4 different turbos. The T3, T25, TD04-13c, and TD05-12b.
The T25 is almost uncommon enough not to mention, very similar to the TD04-13c.
The 13c is the most common, 2 different versions of it, but they are very similar. It was avaliable from at least '88 to the end of the 940 in 95.
That's right, my 87 740 had a Garrett AirResearch T3, I rebuilt it and messed with it. The 93 940 has a Mitsu TD04-13c I think. I had to replace it at 190k miles.
The Mitsu is a better quality piece IMO, in terms of reliability. But for max power at higher RPM you'd want the T3, or a different version of the same basic turbo.
YAH! As JD mentioned, I just bought his. I drove it home from Asheville, and have started driving it to work last week. It goes, and it can hold a bunch of stuff. The perfect solution to the "two kids, two dogs, no cash, and I want to go fast" problem.

Seen it. Actually been using as a resource but haven't been able to find the actual issue at home. I hope wifey hasn't pitched it!
GRM used to have a really sweet one at their old offices years ago. Anybody have a pic of that one? It's the inspiration for the one I will build one day.

The APC stuff is way outdated now. You can get really good chips for under $200 from a few vendors that can handle ignition and fueling for most anything you throw at it under 300hp.
