Unrestored is one thing and I can understand it having value because of such.

Being a rusted out hulk of E36 M3 that somebody threw some wheels on, cut the springs, and dropped an LS engine in doesn't make it more valuable.

you can add patina:

strip paint off of hood. pee on hood. wait 2 days.

tada! patina. (does not work on miatas, or corvettes.)

I picked up another Triumph TR8 last year that definately has a patina paint job. That's just another way of saying that it needs a new one.

I helped a man build a fiberglass 32 Ford 14 years ago. We did the thick paint/sand/fake rust patina trick on it. It looked 100% authentic right down to the authentic bullet holes shot into the decklid (30.06 into an old Ford hood seamed into the glass) and real rust on the body (same thing, real steel panel seamed into doors and cowl scuffed and oxidized then cleared).

The guy still drives his Rod regularly, and treats it like it looks... poorly, like it was meant to be treated.

Serious.

Un-restored, factory correct, on historically significant cars to me is wroth 1000x patina.

the next golf I see with a rusted hood is getting speed holes.

How about this. This is NOT patina. This does not make it a rat rod. This makes it a rusted hulk of E36 M3.

At this point a full restoration is the only way to prevent the crusher from getting a meal.

No offense, Quas, but this is exactly the kind of "tons of extra cost and effort to make it look like a piece of E36 M3" E36 M3 that really chaps my ass.

I will go even further, its fiberglass its a reproduction NOT a hot rod.

Patina: a quality object that shows the effects of years of use. Not neglect.

Distressed: a new, low-quality object that has been abused to make it appear old.

A race car with stone chips, a worn steering wheel, polished paint on the roll bar and the remnants of a mid-race repair has patina - even if it's only been raced for 24 hours. A freshly modified car with an artificially rusted body is distressed.

We're at the crux of the issue now.

Use it. Use it reguarly. Use it hard. Take care of it, but use it.

It will get real patina soon enough.

If it didn't, it wouldn't be so hard to keep things looking perfect.

Kinda right up there with "barn fresh".

Took this one to a car show the next day after fixing the brakes, fuel system, fluids, tires and some electrical. For every bad remark, I got 25 great remarks! Cool for a while, but paint is in the works.

Another site I frequent has this discussion over toolboxes, vises...basically all the stuff yu find in a garage. You like what you like!

People have been adding "patina" for years on all kinds of things. Clothes, furniture, musical instruments, cars, statues, art work..............not saying it's good or bad.... it just is.

It's barely got any paint, leather upholstery looks really weathered, nothing has even been degreased. I told him it's the best car in here, because it was. It's like a time capsule and I love it. The owner thought I was crazy. And that's because he doesn't think the LACK OF PAINT ADDS TO THE VALUE!!!! (Because it doesn't)

See this is EXACTLY what I mean. Do you understand what a time capsule is or means? It means something perfectly preserved, NOT something that has been allowed to rot.

I get the "original only once" but to me, that's BS once that car is a mess, because that isn't "original" either. IIRC no cars came from the factory with faded paint and rotted interiors. Maybe it's a matter of degrees. I few dents and dings in an all original, low mile Shelby Cobra is OK, but a rusty, rotted Dusenberg is just a rusty, rotted car. These junkyard guys are laughing all the way to the bank. There are acres of cars in Arizona and California that people threw away because they were POS... Now they have patina, authenticity, a time capsule...

I'm not criticizing anyone's taste, just saying, I don't get it.

Like some people think its cool, wearing your pants so low your ass is hanging out.

THIS A Dusenberg that rots in somebody's garage doesn't have patina. I guess by beef is with the word being applied incorrectly, to neglected POS cars. As previously mentioned, a totally overused word like "barn find." Although a totally neglected would fit my definition of barn find.

As a sign painter/pinstriper, I rode the Rat Rod fad all the way to the bank once I found the right formula of matte clear to add to red and beige (NOT white) to give that 50-year "worn" look to lettering and pinstriping.

Problem is, for me anyway, the fad is over, and that cash cow has been milked dry.

That's a good way to put it; the truck I posted was pretty much "Take a beater old truck with a cracked block, put a motor from a wrecked box truck in it, have fun." If I had started with a good clean truck, I wouldn't have intentionally made it look like a beater.

I have thought it would be fun to paint some sort of logo that looks every bit as worn and faded as the rest of the truck on the doors. Yes, that probably is fake patina, but it's less effort than actually restoring the bodywork.
