I've always loved these cars, and I'm thinking about starting a search in a few months. I hear mixed things about Peugots, reliable, unreliable, cheap, expensive, basic, complicated. Has anyone here ever had one or known someone who has? I'd like to try one, but I don't want to go to hell to do it. Anyway, thanks.
I am on alfabb and someone one there has one and they always say that they really really like it. I havent ever seen one other than one in the junkyard though. I think you can still get most parts for them farily easy, but then there may be some stuff you cant, I dont know. I dont think parts are terribly cheap, in general maybe halfway between bmw and porsche? My observathings from looking at the one in the junkyard where that it doesnt look real easy to work on (really tall engine that is tilted waay back), the interior is rather cheaply made compared to similar cars (even worse than my milano is, which is know for crappy interior parts), and that they dont have much headroom at all. Other than that it seems like a farily decent car though. The thing that would probably keep me from buying one (and did actually) is that there isnt really any easy way to find cheap parts like most other cars. I wanted a euro sedan that was something really unusual, which it why i ended up buying the milano, and i havent had any trouble finding parts at all, I have even found 3 in pick and pull since I bought it.
I have no first hand experience....but a few of the points Travis_K brought up were mentioned in road tests when this car was new. That is, the cheap interior and the so-so interior room. (Those same road tests usually "sang the praises" of the Mi16 model.)
If a guy tells you he can find parts more easily for an "orphan" brand Italian car than he thinks he can for a French car....I'd say you should listen and buy something else. Unless you don't plan to drive it all that much.
If you really want one, this is who id ask about it. http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/members/jontg428.html He is the one i mentioned that posts about having one and really liking it. I forgot to mention, I have seen more than a few on craigslist with bent valves too, so either the timing belt or tensioner (or maybe both) require periodic attention.
