There is a fleet of taxis in West Hartford CT using these vehicles and I saw a "civilian" model on the Mass Pike this past week. Anyone know what it is? I think the badge on the drivers side says either VPO or VRS and on the passenger side maybe MV4 or MV1. Strange looking car/van.
it's built by a small company on a ford (Taurus?) car chassis specifically for wheelchair transport. I forget the name now. I've seen a few locally being tested in the transit system.
EDIT: Found it. MV1 by VPG Autos. Link is http://www.vpgautos.com/ but it starts into a video with audio that you can't turn off. Fair warning.
It's built on the old Panther Chassis (Crown Vic).
I read somewhere that they already have gone out of business or went bankrupt or gave their money to a Nigerian Prince or something like that.
probably hard to stay in business when your whole business plan is to build new cars on a chassis that isn't made any more..
Wiki disagrees.
It says it was designed to fit on a General Motors pickup truck chassis with a standard GM drivetrain, but that the production version got a purpose-built chassis designed by Roush, and used a Ford van powertrain. Body-on-frame construction with fully boxed rails.
Not a bad looking effort, IMHO.
