The clearcoat on my E150 is peeling, mostly over.the graphics, and I'm curious if anyone has ever successfully sanded back the clearcoat.

It's the class B motorhome I use to tow the race car with.

No clue what it would cost to paint it but thought sanding might be an alternative. I am sure it's a ton of work.

Yes, and no...

Had the same problem on my '92 Bronco.   By the time I had a nice smooth surface to paint over it looked like this:

There was no saving the base color, but I think it wasn't factory paint... it had probably been repainted at some point.

once, with decent results.  93 Probe GT, black.  used a razor blade to get rid of flaking clear, then feathered the edge, and wet-sanded the whole area with 1000 IIRC.  rattle can clear, wet sanded up to 2000, looked pretty good.  kinda wish i had a reason to keep that car.

I have this issue on multiple cars (all late 80s German machines FWIW).  I have not attempted sanding yet, as it sounds fairly awful.  However, what I have noticed isI can use a plastic scraper (or plastic trim removal tool with similar edge) to "scrape" the clearcoat off starting where it's already peeling.  Eventually I'll get to clearcoat that does not want to come off with the scraper.  However, if the car stays outside, often in 3-4 days I can come back and now there will be some more failing clear at the fresh edges.  I'm seeing if maybe this will work such that by the fall all the clear is off, without removing any base coat.
