Are the Subaru Crosstrek or Impreza my only choices in my new car search?
I am looking for a hatchback with AWD, a manual trans, heated seats and 30mpg combined for under $26kish.
I dont like how the forester looks so that is out.

Jeep Renegade is the only other option I could think of. Otherwise yeah, not a lot of choices with those requirements.
Let's see... real AWD? Or does it matter if it's the fwd biased type? Oh wait.... you said manual... welp, that's it. In fact you're lucky you can even get those vehicles in manual.

I just configured a manual Renegade 4x4 75th Anniversary edition on Jeep's site with the "cold weather group" including heated seats, so it appears to be possible.

According to the configuration you can if you go with the 4x4 Latitude model with the Cold Weather package. And it's still under $26k.
(This is assuming you do a $2300 down payment)
If you are willing to do a little DIY work you can have 2 heated seats in any car for under $90 including a set of hog ring pliers.
Find the AWD manual hatchback with the MPGs first... worry about the warm butt when you get it home. Because you can't get the Crosstrek or the Impreza Limited with a manual (premium or lower trim only) and that is where the leather and heated seats come in.

Yeah it's the 500X, but it isn't as ample with options, so what he's looking for isn't available.

the seats are heated in all but the base crosstrek. They are heated cloth seats like my fiesta which i like.
Also i dont trust Chryco/Fiat at all. so I guess my only option is the crosstrek.

Oh, thats cool. I didn't know they heated the cloth ones - wifey had to get leather to get heat in the '15 Outback so we ended up with a Limited. Or so I was told by wifey...
Either way Crosstrek looks pretty good for what it is but def get the manual. THe CVT in the outback kills the joy by a factor of infinity.

Pretty much. Once you add AWD to the equation, that's really it.
In reply to Brian:
heated seats are standard for 2.0i premium and above, doesn't matter which transmission.
In reply to MrChaos:
I gladly stand corrected. When I went to build an Impreza wagon premium, it showed CVT only. But manual can be had in the Crosstrek and Forester premium, as well as the Sport trim level.
VW will be serving up non lifted or cheap plastic 'ruggidized' Golf AWD wagons cheapish with a manual in a few months.
per Car&Driver "For now, Volkswagen’s slick-shifting dual-clutch automatic is the only transmission, but a six-speed manual will be available in early 2017."
The 1.7l turbo is just a quick and nastly aftermarket tune away from 200hp and 1990 level emissions!

but its a vw
Punish them by getting a good deal! The dealers will be dealing during this long winter of their disconnected. The leaky electrical gremlin riddled sludge crudded problematic dubs were a couple generations ago and VW interiors are way better than Subies recycled styrene environments. Just a thought..

You are right! You have no choice but a small NA motor manual Subie. I put 100k on an Impreza and really liked it except for the interior and NVH and seats. The 2017 Imprezas actually look really good..... Without having to squint, or make stuff up like: "It's charming in an underdog sort of way" or "it will grow on you- in 5 years when they come out with an even uglier one", or "with huge wheels and box flares its RAD!".

I think the salesman put one over on your wife. I have a 2015 2.5L Premium with cloth heated seats. And they were standard equipment, not an option.
