Pretty simple. Do they make the car louder? Especially if the car is lower or higher off the ground. 2.5” duals. V8.

Typically, they are used to help dissipate the sound and make them less loud to those outside the car.

Inside the car, it can seem louder since the sound waves reverberate back into the cabin, which is why it’s usually a good idea to have the exhaust exit past the outside of the car.

Racers have often used turn downs to help point the exhaust away from the sound meters at tracks where they measure sound levels, especially rotary powered cars.  Some have tried to fool the sensors by rotating the turn down when they would move the sound meter.
