If I wanted a often-driven “project” car and picked a Volvo 240 to fill that void, are parts still available, cheap and easy to come by?
I have a GMT800 and really enjoy that parts are everywhere and realize that a 240 won’t be the same. As far as condition and budget, I’m much more Roadkill than Bitchin’ Rides. I just don’t want to get into something with lots of unobtainable parts.
Pretty much everything is out there. They were built from 75 to 93, plus Volvo still tries to support their image as long lived cars, so they support very well. I just restocked my supply of lumbar support wires for the seats, at a reasonable price.

Thanks for that. I assume shocks and springs, body panels are all out there and not sky-high price wise.
It would probably end up more or less gutted with after market seats rather than restored. So as long as the parts that make it go and stop are out there...

Everytime I go into the local junkyard I see two or three of them without trying. Let me know if you need anything and I'll do my best.
Their still very well supported in the performance aftermarket as well with regard to suspension and steering bits.
They are around but prices for the 240’s are now climbing and fewer are showing up at the junkyards or coming up for sale these days.
There's still a pretty large community support too. A lot of it has left Turbobricks for Facebook.
I just got this off a FB group for my glacially slow 242 project.
Depends on where you live. There used to be tons of them in Minnesota, but most of them rusted away to nothing a long time ago.

I really want to get a 240, that, OE turbo bits, a quaiffe steering rack, 5.38 ring and pinion, khephenke steering bits, JVAB suspension and to hoon. When the 323 is wrapped up, it'll be what's next.

I think I know what to I want to do, I know just enough to be dangerous, but that hasn't stopped me from buying parts.
So far, I've got a '76 242 DL, I just got that 16V head, and matching intake manifold, I've a couple '80s model B230s to chose from, a 760 turbo parts wagon (I have other plans for it ), a eBay turbo manifold, a B2600i (RX7 T2) transmission, Mega Squirt 2, Innovative Wideband, Koni 8610 inserts, and a bunch of other random related stuff. I'm going the DIY coilover route with the Konis. I think I'm going to get one of CX Racing's ball bearing, "GT35" variants. I plan to ditch the D30 for an 8.8 with LSD, redrill the front hubs to match 5x4.5 and give me a much better wheel selection, I don't do spacers/adapters.
I hope to put it all together sometime in the next couple years and have more than just a Swedish lawn ornament. A boy can dream.
