1974 Ford Truck You Ford fans know at least what family this engine is?

Thinking it's an FE.

Maybe it's just the angles, but it doesn't look like the top row of bolts for the valve cover is in the intake manifold, in which case, it is not an FE. In fact, that front cover/water pump looks like a 400M (Tall-deck, long-stroke Cleveland engine)

Looks like a 351 Cleveland or a 351/400M to me.

Edit:  Reason I think this is the front of the block behind the water pump.

Yup, more research, it's definitely not an FE. If it's original (although the orange paint calls that to question) it's likely either a 351M or 400M.

Sold to tax refund crazy for $700. Way to much for an unknown engine donor.

Cleveland or an M motor for sure.

The M motors were smog versions of the Cleveland.

Not a big block and not a small block.

The Cleveland motor was used in the Pantera and the Torino/Montego/Mustang maybe others.

The whole vehicle or just the motor?  These big-cube 70's Ford V8's seem like a decent blank canvas if you want to spend the money on heads and pistons from today's aftermarket.

In reply to pres589 (djronnebaum) :

Whole vehicle. For Challenge purposes it had a bed full of scrap but I didn't see something I could zero out.

If it's in a truck and is original to the vehicle, it's an M engine.  Not a bad engine but not great either.  Not a choice for high performance modifications.

Isn't orange the Chevy engine color?  e.g. why would you paint a Ford engine a rather silly color if you had no reason to.

Big ass bearings on a heavy iron crank not something that revs up good, small valves and ports.

We used to put the Cleveland heads on a Windsor block, made a great circle track motor.

Put the throttle return spring on that thing before you try to start it!

I started writing this on my lunch break, just posting it now, so forgive me if it's already been done.

Cleveland/modified will have the bolts for the fuel pump in a vertical orientation in relation to each other. Windsor family engines will have the fuel pump bolts in a horizontal orientation.

I might not know much about American Iron but are we not getting terribly close to having a spat about how an FE or any Ford can be called a big block? I was holding off due to my ignorance. winklaughdevilangel
