i have a 98 2.8 30v that has a bad bottom end. i have a good 96 2.8 12v short block.

can i use the 96 shortblock and swap all the 30v stuff over? it will be installed in the 98 30v chassis.

I have an early 98 30v (and by early 98, I mean delivered in early August of 97; I think it's like car #1500 of the model year). For most engine parts I've needed, I actually need the 12v part, not the later 30v parts. A lot of that is minor stuff -- certainly nothing on the scale you're talking about -- but I think a lot of stuff carried over to the 30v cars.

I bet it would work -- Audi seems to have built through the 12v/30v changeover with a lot of carryover. I hesitate because of possible valve cutouts in the pistons or things like that, but I think the pistons are pretty much flat tops.

I don't know -- but keep us posted!

Have you checked out the motor geek forums? Lots of Audi knowledge there.

It wouldn't surprise me if you could combine the two engines. Pistons are likely different, but not an insurmountable issue.

go to vwvortex.com. Absolutely enormous forum. I'm sure you will find your answer in the technical forum. They have a forum dedicated specifically to 2.8 v6's found in the passat and A4.

If it's anything like the VW/Audi 4 cyl. engines, no. The 2 valve per cyl combustion chamber had a 30cc (or so) chamber in the head and about 15cc in the piston dish. The 4 and 5 valve per cyl engines have pretty much flat top pistons and a 45cc head. So if you put the 4 or 5 valve heads on a 2 valve block, you get really low compression, and the inverse of that will result in really high compression.
