You think it's a competition and it is but, it's been my experience that your competitor really wants you to succeed. Those seasoned guys, like the guys in the big hats, genuinely are eager to help and they will give you tons of advice and help right up to the point where you start beating them. At that point, you are then the one giving the advice.
One more thing about local events that I do dig: You never know who else will show up.
At our local Central Florida events, we regularly get national champs–current and from days past. It’s a chance to walk the course with the best, learn from the best, and run against the best.
