So I will buying my friends autocross 86 (pics and full story later) and I will be running it for the first time at this weekends autocross. Im excited but also nervous because I have never driven anything on hoosiers before. The car has A6s up front and R6s in the rear. Any tips so I don't make a fool of myself?

How old are they?
An A6/R6 stagger should make for a loose ride. Not sure why he would run a road course compound on the rear while running a soft autox compound up front.

Its an ae86 with 4agze swap

He ran them that way because he liked the rotation.

Take it a touch easy your first couple of runs to get used to the grip and warm the tires. There will be a lot more "immediacy" to your inputs than you are used to. First time r-comp drivers often take out the inside cones more than the outside cones.

Probably want mid-high 20's for air pressure. Some people think that they can do no wrong on Hoosiers. That's not really the case, they simply allow you to perform at a higher level and recover from what would be a catastrophic mistake and look like a hero doing it.

What size are the tires and how many runs do they have on them?

If it takes A's on the front and R's on the rear of an AE86 I suggest the chassis set-up is off a fair bit.

I know it likes to pick up a wheel I just cant remember which one.

As for tire size it has: 275/45(?)/15 all the way around. They have around 8 runs on them plus 50ish miles of street driving.

It's been a long time, but my biggest notes to the Hoosiers vs. Kuhmos- 1) they warm up a whole lot faster, and 2) they have a little more grip. I really loved having a set one season, but could not justify the cost over a few years- the Kuhmos I ran would last an entire season well enough, but the Hoosiers would not AND cost more.

All in all, they are super fun tires!

Should be 275/35 15. It's the default size for a lot of cars (mine included). In a RWD car I'd hope it's lifting an inside front tire, if it's lifting a rear you need WAY more front spring and bar.

Sounds like the tires are in their sweet spot for sticky. Protect them from freezing and they aught to carry you through next season before they drop off badly.

As to the A vs R, if you can handle the rotation then you're golden. If your skills aren't up for it simply rotate them and bring the car back to understeer with silly high limits of adhesion.

We published an article in the magazine on this exact topic about a year ago. Slick Seven (7 tips to ease the jump from street tires to true racing slicks.) Hope this helps!

I spent 9 yrs with my autox only AE86,it was a awhile ago and never made it up to 275's.I did run on hoosier 9.5"x20x13 slicks though.

The rear bushing bind with even soft stockers and get worse with poly,it can pick an inside rear up even when the springs and bars say it shouldn't be.I went to an equal lenght heim jointed 3 link setup, solved that problem. Also an adjustable height both ends panhard bar for messing with the rear roll center, hint lower worked more better.

At the front the cars love lotsa camber,I ran mine at -3.5.I also moved the inside lca pivot up 1.5" and used a rca at the strut so even with the major lowering I still had some camber gain with compression.

If your picking up the front then more than likely the rear is too soft for those big meats and could point to the A's on the front and R's on the rear.

Btw I played around a lot with differing setups and started out following the herd to big adjustable sway bars, every time I unhooked the rear regardless of rear spring used the car got better.

In fact I went full barless eventually.

Saved that for reading later. Totally forgot about that article.

Im fairly certain it picks up the inside front tire but haven't seen it run in a while and I have never driven it in anger.
