Styling of anything is mostly cyclical based on the underlying design. As new technologies of materials and production are introduced it takes time for car designers to learn how to move away from me-too to different. The Audi 5000 and Taurus were the beginning of the modern aero movement even though Cadillac at about the same time was making cars that would be just as aerodynamic without being to jellybean like (ignore the Catera here). Much of popular styling reflects trends in lifestyle, fashion, movies, etc. As the French might say, "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose."
